NerdWord: nerf

This is the second in a new series of irregular entries defining words from geek culture. If you have suggestions or requests, shoot me an e-mail or leave a comment below.

To nerf: To make worse or weaken, usually in the context of weakening something in order to balance out a game.[This usually refers to weapons or other items in first-person shooter games or MMORPGs.]

nerfherder.jpgThe nerf is also a form of livestock in the Star Wars universe.[Princess Leia likened Han Solo to a "stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder" in The Empire Strikes Back ... then proceeded to unknowingly make out with her own brother. That'll teach her to use such language. (Han didn't hold it against her.)]

NERF is also a brand of foam toys now owned by Hasbro. Or so I’m told.
