I agree all around. It's a very solid movie that's both accessible to newcomers and provides plenty of easter eggs for the dedicated fan. The movie works quite well as a reboot, emphasizing what makes Trek so alluring, while ditching unwieldy, excessive history.

Though, as a comic geek with a deep and unabashed love for continuity, I gotta say using time travel to eliminate any potential continuity flaws is kinda taking the easy way out. At least the writers acknowledged their shortcut with the metatext bit between spock-prime and kirk.

Nice review. I agree with much of what you said and think that the movie was awesome. I loved the story and time travel element of it a lot. It was easy to understand and wicked cool. As a fan of LOST I've got to say nobody tells cool time travel stories like J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof. I was never a big Star Trek fan, until now, but this movie rocks big time. It's got great action, comedy, drama and some of the best special effects I've ever seen.
