In 2001, after bursting onto the scene and receiving critical acclaim for his mind-bending sci-fi film “Donnie Darko,” writer-director Richard Kelly stumbled badly with his 2006 follow-up “Southland Tales.” His next major project “The Box,” opening this week, achieves neither the highs, nor lows of his previous efforts. It is, however, a thought-provoking and respectable effort, that proves Kelly is a talent and “Darko” wasn’t entirely beginner’s luck.
Author ArchiveComic-Con founder, Sheldon Dorf, passes awayNovember 5th, 2009, 2:12 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
In 1970, Dorf put together the Golden State Comic-Convention, in a time where comic book cons were few and far between. From these humble beginnings the convention grew to what is now the largest gathering of comic and pop culture fans in the country. Give ‘Stray Bullets’ a shot! Writer-artist David Lapham creates a beautifully interconnected world full of criminal tales. We see how thin the line is between the normal world and the dark underbelly. Seeing the bad things that happen to good people who cross that line, mistakenly or otherwise, never ceases to enthrall. Lapham’s black-and-white art matches the intensity and strength of his writing. In my opinion, aside from the legendary Frank Miller and possibly Matt Wagner, Lapham is the finest writer/artist working in the industry today. And I mean RIGHT NOW! For the next hour, until 2 p.m. PST, the epic first-person shooter is on sale for only $2.49. Valve is known for awesome deals, but this is a steal, even for them! Quit reading this and go buy it already! The real reason behind the Large Hadron Collider’s woes?October 14th, 2009, 5:55 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
Is the future itself protecting mankind from its own hubris? I’m no physicist, so I have no idea if this is true or even possible, but I REALLY want it to be. The New York Times published an essay discussing a radical theory about why the Large Hadron Collider, with which scientists hope to discover new elementary particles, has had such a troubled road. Physicists Holger Bech Nielsen and Masao Ninomiya have suggested that the existence of the particles the machine is designed to create are so abhorrent to the universe that it is reaching back in time to prevent the machine from ever coming online. As crazy as it sounds, it’s not that much wilder than some other ideas hypothesized by advanced physics. Actually, it’s kind of comforting to think that the universe is looking out for itself. As long as the delays and mishaps the collider has gone through so far don’t escalate into cyborg killing machines sent back to alter mankind’s destiny. DC’s ‘Blackest Night’ resurrects deceased titlesOctober 13th, 2009, 3:07 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
Though the books have been off the market for years, January’s one-shots will pick up in current continuity and deal with the effects the undead Black Lanterns are having throughout the DC universe. Artists for the projects haven’t been released yet. The “Blackest Night” comic will be skipping that month to allow artist Ivan Reis to catch up in preparation for the series’ double-sized final issue. America’s newest sex symbol: Marge Simpson?October 9th, 2009, 4:25 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
I’m curious to see how this will be received. This isn’t the first time Playboy has tried to appeal to the younger set, with previous cover featuring female professional wrestlers and G4’s Olivia Munn. Going with a female cartoon character is a little different. More proof that Comic-Con is out of controlOctober 7th, 2009, 12:58 am by Chris "KeL" Adams
If you were planning on making the pilgrimage to comicdoms holiest of holys next year, better act fast or you may wind up on the outside looking in. DC Comics going Hollywood?October 6th, 2009, 2:59 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
With the recent reorganization, parent company Time-Warner has placed DC Comics under their film division. This reflects the growing influence that comic book movies have garnered in recent years. DC is considered a development house for potential movies. What better place to work on possible film ideas than Los Angeles? Zombieland’s sense of humor alive and kickingOctober 2nd, 2009, 12:08 am by Chris "KeL" Adams
Despite the abundance of gore and cannibalistic undead, “Zombieland” isn’t a horror movie. While there are a few scares and tense moments, on the whole the film is played more for laughs than for chills. Clearly taking a page from the brilliant English romantic comedy/zombie movie “Shaun of the Dead,” the characters are usually more concerned about their personal wants and needs than the ever-present threat posed by the ravenous ghouls. |
