In addition to the hordes of popular talent already announced for Phoenix Comicon 2009 Jan. 23-25 at the Mesa Convention Center, here are some more names that were recently added to the list:

Phoenix Cactus Comicon 2009

Richard LeParmentier — portrayed Admiral Motti in the original Star Wars movie. He was the Imperial officer above who believed more in the power of the Death Star than in the power of the Force. Darth Vader’s response left him all choked up.

Jo Chen — most well known to American comic readers as the cover artist of Runaways and Joss Whedon’s current Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic published by Dark Horse.

Sean “Cheeks” Galloway — an artist, penciller, character designer, conceptual designer, and toy designer for projects from the top comic publishers (Marvel, Dark Horse, DC, Image) to Disney, Hasbro, Sony, and Dreamworks productions. ‘Street Fighter IV’ box art and launch date revealed

October 2nd, 2008, 5:50 pm by Scott Kirchhofer

Street Fighter IV, U.S. box art for the Xbox 360

Capcom’s highly anticipated Street Fighter IV is coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation3 and PC early next year. GameStop is offering a bonus headband for pre-ordering the game, and they are saying the game will ship on Feb. 3 - though I can’t seem to confirm that date with any other source.

What is official is the sweet box art for the the regular edition of the game (there’s also a collector’s edition). It features one of my favorite fighters, Chun-Li, who is also in the upcoming movie Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. The movie stars Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk and is set to hit theaters on Feb. 27

Phoenix Cactus Comicon 2009Attention all you comic book guys and gals: you can save on admission to the Valley’s own comic book convention. If you act quickly.

Memberships to Phoenix Comicon 2009 cost $25 through Sept. 30. After that, the price will rise to $30.

The event will run Jan. 23-25 at the Mesa Convention Center. [MAP] Organizers say there will be more guests, more parties and dances, and this year the age for free child admission with a paid adult ticket is actually being RAISED to 12, from 10 last year. Nice! When was the last time we parents actually got a break? (Except for that tax thing.)

The impressive guest list so far includes Marina Sirtis, Counselor Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation; geek blogger/author/TNG actor Wil Wheaton; Aaron Douglas, Chief Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica; Gil Gerard and Erin Gray from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century; Lou Ferrigno, TV’s Incredible Hulk; and comic book writer and Star Wars and Dune novelist Kevin J. Soulcalibur has come a long way since its glory days on the Sega Dreamcast in 1998. Back then, the weapons-based fighting game by Namco was a huge hit for the short-lived console and set itself apart from similar games by offering superior controls and gorgeous graphics.

Ten years later, Soulcalibur IV raises the bar again with improved visuals, elaborate character-customization options and the long-awaited ability to play against others online. Throw in some Star Wars characters and you’ve just made a fighter’s dream come true.

San Diego Comic Con 2008, Jabba the Hutt
A FULL-SIZE JABBA THE HUTT REPLICA, BUT NO PRINCESS LEIA. THAT’S TOMORROW!

It was my second day at the San Diego Comic-Con and I think I’m hitting my stride — meaning I spent the whole day going to comic, sci-fi and anime panels, walking the convention floor while buying lots of comics, geeking out with Con-goers about comics, movies and what famous people we’ve seen at the convention; the whole time getting lots of cool, free swag and loving every minute.
