Penny for your thoughts?

Gabe from Penny Arcade (aka Mike Krahulik) has posted a cleaner version of his cover art for the upcoming D&D book Player’s Strategy Guide than has been floating around the Interwebz since the title was announced last week at Gen Con:

The piece is a wraparound, so we’re only seeing the front cover here.

The artist speaks:

I was really surprised that they asked me to do this. All the D&D book covers have such a strong and classic aesthetic. I was nervous about doing the cover because my style doesn’t really match up with the rest of the books, but they assured me they wanted this particular book to have a different/distinctive look.

One hundred and fifty people submitted footwear designs in the Dungeons & Dragons “Sell Your Sole” contest, and now it’s time to cast your vote to narrow the field down to 18 finalists.gridsneaker

Voting ends July 28 and winners will be announced Aug. 3. The victorious footwear artist will get $1,000 cash as well as a treasure horde of autographed D&D goodies.

Reminder: FiestaCon starts today in Tempe

quofumFiestaCon, a gathering of sci-fi and fantasy fans, starts today at the Tempe Mission Palms and runs through the weekend.

Guests include sci-fi author Alan Dean Foster; fantasy artist Todd Lockwood; genre-bending novelist (and former Disney comic book writer) Diana Gabaldon; and Aprilynne Pike, author of the New York Times bestselling novel for young adults, “Wings.”

Sci-fi/fantasy convention lands in Tempe for July 4 weekend

Art by Todd LockwoodFantasy artist Todd Lockwood and sci-fi author Alan Dean Foster will headline the FiestaCon convention over Independence Day weekend in Tempe.

Foster, who lives in Prescott, is a prolific writer whose credits include many original stories in addition to novelizations of films such as the first three Alien movies, Clash of the Titans, The Chronicles of Riddick, Transformers and this year’s Star Trek and Terminator Salvation.

Lockwood worked as staff artist at Wizards of the Coast, where he illustrated cards for Magic: The Gathering and redefined the look of Dungeons & Dragons for the release of the game’s 3rd Edition in 2000. He lives in Washington state. Read the rest of this entry »
