Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment, is now part-owner of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers franchise.
Did the global economic summit that just concluded in that city include a secret delegation of Night Elves, Tauren, Trolls and other representatives of the races of Azeroth from Blizzard’s online RPG World of Warcraft?
Well, no one can prove it didn’t …

First Starcraft fans learn there will be no LAN support for Blizzard’s upcoming Starcraft II so the company can instead push its own Battle.net service. Now they also have Battle.net to blame for waiting longer to play the real-time strategy game.
Blizzard has announced Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty will arrive in the “first half of 2010,” according to Kotaku:
In a statement to the Blizzard community, the developer writes “Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game.”
The newest incarnation of Battle.net is expected to be ready early next year.
UPDATE: It’s worth noting that Blizzard-Activision’s lackluster revenue is also probably a contributing factor.

Spider-Man writer-director Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the movie adaptation of World of Warcraft, according to Variety. The film is being bankrolled and distributed by Warner Bros. and produced by Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment, which makes the popular online roleplaying game.
Raimi’s experience producing TV’s Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess and, more recently, Legend of the Seeker should come in handy for this long-awaited fantasy project.

From our sister site The Orange County Register’s Blizzard Blog:
BlizzCon tickets will be on sale again Saturday at 10 a.m. Last time, tickets went fast — too fast for anyone who wasn’t in the queue when it started, in fact.
Be sure to get to the Blizzard Store before the tickets go on sale (or just refresh this link, provided on Blizzard’s front page) and hope for the best.
Good luck to everyone trying to get in!

It looks like the Blizzard press machine is starting to rev up ahead of BlizzCon. They’ve got Bestiary updates for the long-awaited Diablo III and details on “Echoes of War,” a symphonic soundtrack featuring music from StarCraft II, Diablo III and World of Warcraft due this spring.
Meanwhile, if you’re hoping to go to Anaheim for BlizzCon in August, I hope you already have your tickets — they sold out a half-hour after going on sale earlier this month. But it’s not like there’s a lack of things to do in Anaheim…
UPDATED: I should have mentioned that a new batch of tickets will go on sale this Saturday, May 30. Thanks, Twitter followers!

As reported by GamePolitics via our sister blog in Orange County:
“Wrath of the Lich King” is being held up again in China — apparently, a second iteration of the game for the Chinese market has been rejected by regulators. The problem? It’s against the law to showcase human skeletons in China, which “Lich King” is chock full of. Apparently some sneaked into this second edited version.
Considering the World of Warcraft expansion is named for an undead monarch and features the Death Knight as a new character class, at what point does it become pointless to even release the thing in China?
