Next ‘Doctor Who’ special arrives in time for Christmas

s0_07_wal_01The next Doctor Who special in this year of no regular-season episodes will air Dec. 19 on BBC America, just over a month after it debuts in its native Britain.

According to a report from Airlock Alpha, the episode, titled “Waters of Mars,” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Feb. 2. But that’s not all: A five-disc set featuring all of this year’s specials — “The Next Doctor,” “Planet of the Dead,” “Waters of Mars” and the upcoming two-part finale for outgoing star David Tennant, will also be available priced from $50.

“Waters of Mars” introduces a new companion for Tennant’s Doctor: the strong-minded Adelaide, played by veteran Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan (pictured above with Tennant in a scene from the BBC special).

‘Wizard of Oz’ goes HD for 70th anniversary

The Yellow Brick Road never looked so yellow and bricky.

The film adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz is turning 70, and to celebrate the occasion a remastered, high-def version has been prepared for a national theater tour. Turner Classic Movies host and film historian Robert Osborne recorded an introduction for the movie, which will be screened Sept. 23 at several Valley theaters. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Star Trek’ on DVD, Blu-ray Nov. 17

Star Trek will beam down for DVD and Blu-ray Nov. 17. Fans can choose from a three-disc Blu-ray with digital copy, two-disc DVD with digital copy or a single DVD.

Special features on the Blu-ray and two-disc DVD include more on villain Nero’s backstory, deleted scenes featuring the Klingons and “augmented reality technology” that uses your webcam for a 3D holographic tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

‘Ghostbusters’ game dated

Atari has dated Ghostbusters: The Video Game, a 25th-anniversary celebration of the movie’s original release with a story written by two of its writers and stars, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd.

Completely by coincidence (ahem), the game for most platforms — PlayStation 3, PS2, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo DS and Windows — will release on the same day as the film debuts on Blu-ray.

Cartoon Network airs surprise ‘Clone Wars’ preview special tonight

Star Wars, Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano, Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, Jedi, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros.

TheForce.Net is reporting that Cartoon Network will air a half-hour special 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, Sept. 26) to drum up excitement for next Friday’s launch of the CGI TV series The Clone Wars.

It’s hosted by Ashley Eckstein, who plays Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano (above, going into battle with her mentor Anakin Skywalker). Read the rest of this entry »

It was my second day at the San Diego Comic-Con and I think I’m hitting my stride — meaning I spent the whole day going to comic, sci-fi and anime panels, walking the convention floor while buying lots of comics, geeking out with Con-goers about comics, movies and what famous people we’ve seen at the convention; the whole time getting lots of cool, free swag and loving every minute.

Gaming news from E3: Sony’s big day

E3 Media and Business Summit (formerly known as Electronic Entertainment Expo)One of the biggest video game publicity events is happening this week at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles. That means lots of gaming news, updates and a sick amount of eye candy.

Microsoft made some big announcements yesterday, Jayson Peters wrote about Nintendo’s press conference earlier today and now I’m going to cover Sony’s plans for the future. The company is hoping to gain a larger part of the gaming market by expanding their library of exclusive games and offering a completely unique online experience.

E3 Media and Business Summit (formerly known as Electronic Entertainment Expo)One of the biggest video game publicity events is happening this week at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles. That means lots of gaming news, updates and a sick amount of eye candy.

Microsoft held their press conference today and capitalized on the recent news that the Xbox 360 will get a price drop ($299 for the 20-gigabyte hard drive). They boosted interest in the console by showing off some impressive new games and Xbox LIVE features to be released this fall.
