Archie’s choice: Some questions just shouldn’t be answered

Betty or Veronica?

Archie Comics is entering dangerous territory with a six-issue story arc that answers that question for carrot-topped everyman Archie Andrews.

For decades the hapless high schooler has been town between sweet, blond girl-next-door Betty and raven-haired heiress Veronica. Now he will propose to one of them in next week’s issue No. 600, and twins aren’t far behind. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Yo Joe’ or ‘No Joe’? Who knows? You’re on your own, soldier.

August 5th, 2009, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

In a clear indication of just how bad G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is likely to be, Paramount has declined to let critics see it before it opens Friday, The Associated Press reported.

The way studio executives see it, they’re doing you a favor by freeing you from the tyranny of the evil print and broadcast media:

Paramount Pictures

G.I. Joe is a big, fun, summer event movie - one that we’ve seen audiences enjoy everywhere from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland (pictured, right) to Phoenix, Ariz.,” said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount Pictures. “After the chasm we experienced with Transformers 2 between the response of audiences and critics, we chose to forgo opening-day print and broadcast reviews as a strategy to promote G.I. Joe. We want audiences to define this film.”

destroPhoenix? When was that? Must have been a carefully vetted test audience, because I’ve heard to expect nothing but the worst. But that’s all right — we knew it was going to be bad when we saw those ridiculous power suits and bizarre casting. This is a Netflix candidate if ever there was one.

Bad as it is, they can’t take away our childhood memories, which is why I’ve prepared a slideshow of images — nostalgic and new — generously provided by Hasbro and Paramount. Just click on classic Destro, or the link below, to begin!

Figures in the cards for ‘Magic’ creator’s next game

August 4th, 2009, 9:01 am by Jayson Peters

kmlogoMagic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield is working on a new collectible card game that incorporates collectible figures.

Ku-Mighty, which will be aimed at ages 10 and older, will be sold in the familiar starter set and booster pack model. Prices and release dates have not been announced.

The game mixes strategy and luck to create a different game scenario each round. “With Ku-Mighty, we’re giving the gaming world something brand new in terms of gameplay, and a highly detailed and engaging story to boot,” Garfield said in a statement released by Ultimate Gaming Hideout (UGH!), the game’s manufacturer.

The game’s story is an “epic tale set in the not-too-distant future weaving the entirety of human history in a fantastic pop Sci-Fi tale.”

Ku-Mighty is UGH!’s first game. The company was founded to create games for kids and families of all ages to play together combining fun, strategy and story. An animated series is being planned.

LEGO goes to infinity and beyond!

July 25th, 2009, 10:12 pm by Jayson Peters

The Disney Blog (not an official Disney blog, but a darn good one) talks a bit about the LEGO Toy Story Mini Figures that debuted this week at San Diego Comic-Con.

What caught my eye was the Army Men — complete with a rifle:

ts-gam-sm

Is LEGO further easing their stance against weapons in the hands of its MiniFigs that led to the rise of third-party accessories from companies like BrickArms? Or was the money to be had in an alliance with Disney-Pixar just too good to pass up?

Riddle me this …

According to the Tampa Tribune (AP story here), a Florida man is being sued by DC Comics for copyright and trademark infringement because he was selling figurines that resemble characters from the 1960s Batman live-action TV show.

Johnny's Resin Kits

Johnny's Resin Kits

John Stacks, who ran johnnysresin.com (”closed” at the time of this posting, though pages are still accessible to Google search), marketed the resin model kits as representations of the actors who played Batman (Adam West), Robin (Burt Ward), Catwoman (Julie Newmar), the Joker (Cesar Romerot), Batgirl (Yvonne Craig), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Riddler (Frank Gorshin), Egghead (Vincent Price) and King Tut (Victor Buono).

The entrepreneur claims in the articles above to have working relationships with several of the actors represented, but this seems to be a matter of dispute — either that, or these stars of yesteryear are understandably trying to distance themselves from his predicament.

In a marketplace flooded with often sub-par, mass-produced toys and collectibles, it’s fairly common these days to find talented fans making — and sometimes selling — custom action figures and models. It’s pretty well understood, though, that selling such items is risky business at best. When it’s a likeness of an actor, that’s a different matter altogether — especially if one has the backing of said celebrity. But it’s also far less profitable.

‘Golden Age’ comics worth a mint

Comic Book Auction

ASSOCIATED PRESS PHOTO

True to the spectrum of good vs. evil that defines most comic books, Free Comic Book Day has its own polar opposite.

As The Associated Press reports, a Texas 78-year-old is auctioning off more than 100 comics he bought for 10 cents each at his neighborhod drug store as a kid. They’re expected to fetch half a million dollars.

That’s what I call a good investment.

The collection boasts the likes of “Batman” No. 1 and “Marvel Comics” No. 1. The most expensive comic - expected to clear $100,000 - is the scarce “Marvel Mystery Comics” No. 9, noted for its cover battle between the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner.
