Just days before the launch of their much-anticipated Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Paizo Publishing announced that the first print run had sold out, with all preordered copies on their way to stores for an Aug. 13 release.
“We thought we had printed enough to last us at least until the end of this year, but skyrocketing demand from our customers and distributors has us reprinting already,” said Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo. “We have a healthy amount heading to Gen Con, but we think even those will go fast.”
Gen Con, the world’s largest and longest-running gaming conventions, will be Aug. 13-16 in Indianapolis. Read the rest of this entry »

Gamers eager to Dungeon & Dragons Online for free will have to wait a little bit longer. The transition to the no-fee DDO Unlimited, which had been scheduled for next week in North America, has been pushed back to Sept. 9.
“We’ve had a tremendous response to DDO Unlimited from the players and press who are participating in our beta program,” said Fernando Paiz, Executive Producer of DDO Unlimited. “We’ve been holding a series of live events as part of the beta program and have seen an unprecedented level of participation from players. While we are very pleased with the performance of the game and are excited about the response from the players, we are committed to delivering a high-quality experience. We feel that more time is needed to deliver on this commitment. As a result, we are delaying our launch to ensure that we can support the massive increase in players that we are expecting and deliver them a free to play experience like none other.”

Wizards of the Coast is planning a series of updates to Dungeons & Dragons supplements and adventure modules produced near the end of 3rd Edition’s lifespan that will make them more useful to players of the newer 4th Edition.
The following 3.5-version products will “go Fourth” this month:
- Exemplars of Evil
- Elder Evils
- Fortress of the Yuan-ti
- Stormreach
- Dragons of Eberron
- Anauroch
D&D creative manager Chris Perkins noted in the official game forum: “Normally I’d say ‘Better late than never,’ but these are pretty damn late. Again, profuse apologies. We suck.” Supplements published during the transition between editions, before the new rules were out, carried a logo that indicated they would be compatible with 4th Edition.

An Associated Press story reveals more details about the recent Dungeons & Dragons lawsuits than you can shake a Rod of Lordly Might at.
One of the defendants is bravely questing forth to represent himself in a copyright infringement suit filed by Wizards of the Coast, which is basically Hasbro — one of the largest toymakers in the world. His case appears to be headed for mediation, so he may yet make his saving throw vs. scary corporate lawyers.

EN World, one of the largest communities of roleplaying gamers online, has posted a PDF of a draft tactical board game that seeks to model the exciting starship combat seen in popular movies and television shows.
The game — called SPACE FIGHT! – will eventually be sold as a full-color, softback book and as a PDF — and its creator is even offering employment to artists who can illustrate spaceships for the gamepieces.

This Saturday, June 20, is Free RPG Day, and gamers across the globe will be able to grab brand-new material for a variety of pen-and-paper roleplaying games — no overstock, retail-priced or dead product here. In the Valley, Gamer’s Inn in Mesa is listed as a participating retailer.
Sponsors include Wizards of the Coast, which contributed a Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition adventure module and Dungeon Tile; Paizo, which contributed a D&D 3rd Edition-compatible Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary (pictured); and Q-Workshop, which contributed unique gold dice. Many others are involved, and you can see what their contributions are at the Free RPG Day Sponsors page.
