The latest Doctor Who special, “Planet of the Dead,” has aired on BBC America and is therefore available on iTunes for $1.99 — meaning that fans in the U.S. are now up to date with their British counterparts. At least until this fall, when the next special, “The Waters of Mars,” is expected to air in the U.K.
After that, it’s just a pair of Christmas specials and then David Tennant’s run as the ever-changing Time Lord will be over, giving way to the Matt Smith era.
“Planet of the Dead” guest stars Michelle Ryan (Merlin, Bionic Woman) and comic Lee Evans (There’s Something About Mary) for the first Doctor Who adventure shot in high definition. Ryan plays the mysterious Lady Christina de Souza, who joins the Doctor on a bus trip that takes a very unexpected detour into danger, while British comedy star Lee Evans also joins the cast as a character called Malcolm whose life becomes connected to the Doctor’s under extraordinary circumstances.

It’s no Hogwarts, but it did stand in for the fictional magic academy’s Chamber of Secrets in the movies. And it has that new-hag smell.
The company that runs Wookey Hole Caves in western England recently interviewed applicants for the post of resident witch. A rock formation in the cave system is reputed to be a sorceress turned to stone by holy water, and the tourist attraction employs someone to bring the local legend to life. That responsibility now belongs to former real-estate agent Carla Calamity. If that is her real name.
(Maybe people didn’t fancy buying a home from someone named “Calamity.”)
Her annual contract is worth $82,000 U.S., but you have to know about witchcraft, be comfortable sleeping underground, and like cats. If Ms. Calamity fails to impress, all this could be yours next year.
The cave system was seen on film in the 1975 Doctor Who serial “Revenge of the Cybermen” and the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

“Would you like a jelly baby?”
The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine reports that Tom Baker, the man most people still picture when think of Doctor Who, will return to the TARDIS after nearly three decades for a series of five plays for BBC Audio. He will be joined by Richard Franklin, who played UNIT Capt. Mike Yates in the classic TV series at the time Baker stepped into the role.
The 75-year-old Baker has certainly kept busy since his defining six-year stint as the Time Lord ended, making guest appearances on television and film and doing voice-over work that includes the role of narrator on Little Britain.
The magazine also reveals that Baker’s contemporary John Leeson, the perennial voice of the Doctor’s robot companion K9, will return for the upcoming Australian TV spinoff.

 Gillan and Smith
Filming began today on the new season of Doctor Who, with Matt Smith as the latest incarnation of the Time Lord and Karen Gillan as his companion, whose full name is revealed to be “Amy Pond.”
BBC News has released the first image of the duo in costume, and it reveals the Doctor’s new look to include a tweed jacket, bowtie, rolled-up trousers and black boots.
According to the BBC Press Office, upon arriving on set in Cardiff for his first day of filming Smith commented: “I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.
“I’m excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor.”
Smith has big shoes to fill: David Tennant, who played the Time Lord’s 10th incarnation, announced last year he would give up the role, although he may be returning for a big-screen adventure. Rumors have him announcing such a venture at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Do you remember those plastic tabs on videotapes that you broke off if you wanted to prevent yourself from accidentally taping over something important? If you mastered that technology, you can officially consider yourself smarter than a rocket scientist.
In an embarrassing acknowledgment, NASA said Thursday it must have erased the footage of man’s first moonwalk years ago so that it could reuse the videotape.
I could have spared them a few high-quality VHS tapes from my homemade collection of Babylon 5, if only they had asked.

If you missed it on BBC America — or, like me, miss watching it on the lower-tier Sci Fi Channel — the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas special is now available to download from Apple’s iTunes Store. “The Next Doctor” costs $1.99 and presents the itinerant Time Lord with an interesting dilemma: meeting himself. A roleplaying game based on the hit British sci-fi series Doctor Who will hit hobby stores this fall.
Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space will be available in October. Published by Cubicle 7, the release is a deluxe box set that contains a 144-page Gamemaster’s Guide, an 86-page Player’s Guide, a 30-page Adventures Book, a four-page Quick Start Guide, pregenerated character sheets, blank character sheets, gadget sheets, tokens and dice.
Hopefully, like the Doctor’s TARDIS, the box will be both indestructible and bigger on the inside than it is on the outside — because it will set you back $59.95.
Come to think of it, why isn’t the “deluxe” packaging in the shape of a British police call box, also like the TARDIS?
This is the third official tabletop RPG based on Doctor Who: FASA published one in the ’80s and Virgin in the ’90s. The new game naturally focuses on the 2005 relaunch of the classic series that ran from 1963-89. But with 45 years of accumulated lore from TV episodes, original novels and plays and two spinoffs to date, there is plenty of material to support a full range of gaming supplements — if the market is there for them.
Now, when is somebody going to get around to making a decent video game based on Doctor Who?

Via Outpost Gallifrey:
Just announced: Special guests at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con include new Doctor Who series creator Russell T. Davies and the show’s lead actor, David Tennant (pictured). They will join former executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn on a special panel on Saturday, 26 July, 10:00 am - 11:00 am.
Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood is also returning to Comic-Con, with star John Barrowman appearing on a panel also featuring Davies, Gardner and Lyn. Sharing space at that panel will be the new BBC America series, Being Human. Creator and writer Toby Whithouse plus lead actors Russell Tovey, Lenora Crichlow and Aidan Turner, talk about the inspiration for the show and what it’s like to play three twenty-somethings with secret double-lives – as a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost.
