Next ‘Doctor Who’ special arrives in time for Christmas

October 30th, 2009, 3:30 pm by Jayson Peters

s0_07_wal_01The next Doctor Who special in this year of no regular-season episodes will air Dec. 19 on BBC America, just over a month after it debuts in its native Britain.

According to a report from Airlock Alpha, the episode, titled “Waters of Mars,” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Feb. 2. But that’s not all: A five-disc set featuring all of this year’s specials — “The Next Doctor,” “Planet of the Dead,” “Waters of Mars” and the upcoming two-part finale for outgoing star David Tennant, will also be available priced from $50.

“Waters of Mars” introduces a new companion for Tennant’s Doctor: the strong-minded Adelaide, played by veteran Scottish actress Lindsay Duncan (pictured above with Tennant in a scene from the BBC special).

Nerdcore in the house!

The excellent musical documentary “Nerdcore Rising” about the increase in popularity of so-called nerdcore hip-hop came out on DVD this week. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, it’s even available to stream instantly. Nerdcore takes the genre and spins it in a new direction. Instead of bragging about toughness, money or crime, these rappers talk about the important stuff, like video games, Star Wars, web comics and more.

If the movie sounds interesting and you’d like to see the real thing, you’re in luck. MC Frontalot, the godfather of nerdcore himself, is playing a show in Mesa tommorow night, Saturday, Sept. 19. Also on the bill are Yellow Minute and video game rockers The OneUps. The show is scheduled for 10 p.m. at The Royal Gardens, 1940 E. Main St. in Mesa. Tickets are $10.

If that’s still not enough for you, there will be a 7 p.m. screening of “Nerdcore Rising” (along with the also acclaimed rock-umentary “Anvil” at 9 p.m.) at MADCAP Theaters, 730 South Mill Ave. in Tempe, next Friday. Tickets for both movies are $2.

The Yellow Brick Road never looked so yellow and bricky.

The film adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz is turning 70, and to celebrate the occasion a remastered, high-def version has been prepared for a national theater tour. Turner Classic Movies host and film historian Robert Osborne recorded an introduction for the movie, which will be screened Sept. 23 at several Valley theaters. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Stargate SG-1′ premiere — now with less skin

July 7th, 2009, 2:04 pm by Jayson Peters

cotgThe 1997 series premiere of Stargate SG-1 is getting a DVD makeover that includes a boob job.

“Children of the Gods,” which marked the beginning of a 10-year run for the spinoff of the 1994 feature film Stargate, is being remastered and remixed with a new score from Jerry Goldsmith and voice recording from cast member Christopher Judge (”Teal’c”). Also, the infamous full-frontal nudity scene of Vaitiare Bandera (”Sha’re”) being possessed by a snakelike alien has been recut to be as squeaky-clean as the rest of the series.

Showtime, which launched the series that later moved to Sci Fi, reportedly insisted on the gratuitous skin.

The disc, which will be available July 21, also includes a new restrospective and audio commentary from co-writer and -creator Brad Wright and series star Richard Dean Anderson (“Jack O’Neill”). Source: GateWorld

Watch X-Men cartoon episodes for free

May 5th, 2009, 5:52 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Marvel’s web site is streaming episodes of the 1992 animated X-Men series. They’re releasing a new episode for viewing each week. If you simply can’t wait, the show has also recently been released on DVD. While not the first, this was one of the best comic-book cartoons. It did a great job of translating the feel of the X-Men books to a half-hour show. The program had a solid line-up for the team, including numerous guest-appearances and cameos by famed mutants, including my peronal favorite, Longshot.

At least one Green Lantern movie is advancing

March 1st, 2009, 10:09 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Even though the live action Green Lantern movie appears to be spinning its wheels as it searches for a cast, there is some positive news on the Lantern front. Warner Brothers recently announced a full-length GL animated feature, entitled “Green Lantern: First Flight”. The film will have Hal Jordan as the ring-slinger charged with protecting Earth and the rest of sector 2814.

Actors Christopher Meloni (Hal Jordan), Michael Madson (Kilowog) and Victor Garber (Sinestro) are among those announced to provide voices for the movie. It is scheduled to be released July 28 and retail for $30 for the double disc special edition or $20 for the bare-bones single disc. Read the rest of this entry »

See the Watchmen that’s not in Watchmen

February 13th, 2009, 11:42 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

In an effort to pare down the mammoth scope of Watchmen, director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300) decided early on to axe the “Tales of the Black Freighter” segments from the theatrical release. However, all was not lost, as he recognized that the “Tales” are an integral part of the graphic novel. To appease the fanboys and maintain his cred, he had them done as a separate straight to DVD animated feature. Now we get to see the first trailer and I’m pretty impressed so far. I still have grave reservations about Snyder’s ability to deliver a truly effective Watchmen movie, but hope springs eternal. Read the rest of this entry »
