The new Doctor Who production team may be considering a return to one of the show’s old ways: plastering its star’s face on the iconic and celestial title sequence. It hasn’t been done since the series ended its hibernation in 2005, but it would certainly be one way to shake things up as Matt Smith takes over the title role from David Tennant. At least the rumor is a good sign that Who won’t go the way of so many modern series and truncate or altogether eliminate the title sequence, which is so often an integral part of the viewing experience for fans. The Wii Vitality Sensor peripheral announced at last week’s E3 Expo isn’t as new or groundbreaking a concept as Nintendo would like you to think. Seems it’s been tried before, for Nintendo’s own N64 console — in Japan, anyway. (Wired’s Game | Life blog)
The Star Trek reboot was obviously a success, but is it too early to even be thinking about a Star Wars remake? Not according to the folks at io9. Their recipe for success: Keep it simple, Lucas. That means no trade disputes or midi-chlorians. And it should be a movie, not a video game. (Although BioWare seems to be doing a better job making a Star Wars movie by concentrating on making a video game in the first place.)

At E3 last week, Valve announced a sequel to their hugely popular co-op shooter video game “Left 4 Dead.” (Watch the awesome trailer here.) You’d think fans of the game would be pleased to hear about this. You’d be wrong, this being the Internet and all. Within days over 15,000 players had joined an online group to protest the announcement. These fans are worried that LFD2 will take away promised upgrades to the existing game and divide the player base. “Fans” are complaining that there’s going to be a sequel to a game they like… While I’m sympathetic to gamers’ concerns of being fleeced by game manufacturers, this is a bit much for me. Despite early leaks, Sony still has a few E3 surprisesJune 2nd, 2009, 6:33 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams
The last of the three major gaming companies to present at E3, Sony had a few interesting items to announce. First up, they announced a new version of the PSP, their portable system, called the PSP Go. It looks to be a smaller and lighter version of the handheld console. It will be released on October 1 and retail for $250. The new PSP was known to be in the pipeline for sometime now, but it’s nice to see some additional details to it. Like Microsoft, Sony is jumping on the motion-activated controller bandwagon. Sony’s version will consist of two wands that work in conjunction with the PlayStation camera to create increased accuracy and precision. The early demo showcased using the wands to draw, construct items, control weapons such as a sword and shield or bow and arrow. It should see the light of day some time next year. Various announced games of note are after the jump. Read the rest of this entry » E3: Nintendo reveals new ‘Metroid’ title, but Mario’s the starJune 2nd, 2009, 1:21 pm by Jayson Peters
Nintendo is sticking with its strengths in its E3 revelations. No surprise there. New Super Mario Bros. Wii takes its look from the Nintendo Ds game New Super Mario Bros., but it promises to haul the flagship franchise into the multiplayer age by Christmas. Oh yeah … Super Mario Galaxy 2 is coming next year, too. Metroid: Other M, due out in 2010, will explore the backstory of heroine Samus Aran.
Announced for Nintendo DS and DSi:

The wealth of riches from E3 continues. We’ve seen some pretty impressive news and footage already, but as far as I’m concerned the trailer for Bioware’s online game Star Wars: The Old Republic, blows everything else away. This game looks better and better every time I see it. I’m willing to hand my credit card over right now. The only question now is who’s cooler; Sith or Bounty Hunter? Bioware continues to prove that they’re one of the best in the business. After watching that trailer, I think LucasFilms should just step aside and let Bioware take over making Star Wars movies. I got more out of 4 minutes worth of footage there then I did out of the entirety of the last two or three official movies. ‘The Beatles: Rock Band’ at E3June 1st, 2009, 6:06 pm by Jayson Peters

The Associated Press reported that the accessory, codenamed “Project Natal,” can track a player’s full body movement while responding to commands, directions and a shift of emotion in voice without the need for a controller. You can head on over to the Gawker gaming blog Kotaku for a picture of the device. Read the rest of this entry » |
