Here’s my first attempt at a video game-related jack-o’-lantern.
I’m no pumpkin artist, so in case it’s just so bad that you couldn’t tell, it’s supposed to be a Boo ghost from the Super Mario Bros. games.
Happy Halloween!

It’s not too late to order the signature orange collection boxes of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, an annual drive to raise funds for needy children worldwide — but if you don’t want to chance it, the campaign’s Web site has printable labels designed to turn any can into an official UNICEF collection canister.
Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is an easy way to teach kids — and adults handing out candy who might have some spare change — a charitable lifestyle. Read the rest of this entry »

Amazon has lowered the price of its Kindle e-book reader to $259 and unveiled an international model, according to PC World … but Canada is still Kindle-less due to a lack of wireless distribution agreements for the device’s bookish content, reports the Globe & Mail.
If you’re reading this, O Canada, here’s some of the fun you’ve been missing:

Just in time for your holiday shopping, ThinkGeek has delivered on its promise to try and make its April Fools’ prank of a Star Wars Tauntaun sleeping bag a reality.
According to the e-tailer’s website, the not-so-funny-now item should be available in limited quantities in early November. Currently priced at $99.99 (though that may be just a placeholder amount), the item is described as having an inner lining of cozy “intestines” and a lightsaber zipper pull.
Supplies are sure to vanish faster than lightspeed — so don’t waste any time with your friends at Tosche Station, OK?

Note: This post originally appeared on Sept. 1, 2008.
In honor of Labor Day, today we salute the redshirts: those thankless legions of faceless Starfleet security officers who boldly go in front of their captain … and usually pay the price. Very early in the episode.
As the Klingons say: “Today is a good day to die!”

Starting today and running through Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7, buy two of any item at Atomic Comics and get another one for free.
In other words, buy 2 comic books and get one free. Buy two statues, and get one free.
Need someone to draw you a picture? Gotcha covered:

Of course, the free item must be of equal or lesser value to the least-expensive item purchased.
Atomic Comics has stores in Mesa, Chandler, Paradise Valley and Phoenix.

Texting and driving isn’t specifically illegal in Arizona — yet — but drinking and driving definitely is, which is why cab companies clean up around holidays like the upcoming Labor Day weekend.
Just in time for the party, Discount Cab is rolling out a new service that lets Arizona residents send the company a text message with a pickup address and instantly reserve a ride.
Using you cell phone or smart phone, just text an address to 777222. The request is received by Discount Cab and instantly confirmed. While you wait, you can text STATUS to check on your ride. If you need to cancel the cab ride, simply text CANCEL.
As usual, if you take a Discount cab home after a night on the town, the company will give you a free ride back to your vehicle the next day.

Last week Microsoft announced a new round of price cuts for its Xbox 360 gaming console, right on the heels of Sony slashing the price of its PlayStation 3 and announcing a cheaper, slimmer model. But Nintendo, which has never budged on its Wii pricetag of $250, still refuses to play along despite flagging sales and lackluster game lineups.
Today the company announced an Oct. 4 launch date for Wii Fit Plus, the sequel to Wii Fit, as well as a black Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus bundle and a black Nunchuk. In fact, Wii Fit Plus with the Wii Balance Board accessory will actually cost $10 more than the current Wii Fit. (If you have the board already, the game alone will cost you $20.)
But no price cut, unless you count the sudden return of the Wii Internet Channel as a free download. The application, which was free for the first few months after the Wii’s debut, was priced at 500 Wii Points (or $5) until today, when it was made free again and received upgraded Adobe Flash support.
