September 17th, 2009, 11:23 am by Jayson Peters

untitled-1The creator of the virtual world Second Life is being sued yet again for trademark infringement. In April it was Scottsdale-based Taser suing Linden Labs over digital representations of its stun gun.

Now, a report from Courthouse News Service tells of a new class-action lawsuit by Eros LLC and Shannon Grei claiming Linden is making real money from knockoffs of their virtual erotic products.

To recap: Eros and Grei own rights to sex toys that only exist online … and there are knockoffs!

School’s UFO hoax gives new meaning to ‘British invasion’

July 21st, 2009, 10:04 pm by Jayson Peters

Children in Britain got the shepherd’s pie scared out of them earlier this month when educators, with the cooperation of local police, staged an alien invasion for the little tykes with the goal of inspiring creative thinking and improving their writing skills.

As reported in the U.K.’s Daily Telegraph, the Sussex students — some as young as 7 — were told a UFO had crashed nearby and were encouraged to follow a trail of debris, whereupon they witnessed a performance that included a school staff member’s “alien abduction.”

Parents were not told of the July 10 exercise beforehand, and one described her daughter as “shell shocked” upon returning home from school.

On the bright side, at least now the kids will have something to put in their journals.

Austria hungry for ‘Conan’

June 19th, 2009, 1:04 pm by Jayson Peters

Roland KickingerA bodybuilder-turned-actor from Austria appears to have been cast in the lead role of Lionsgate’s upcoming Conan the Barbarian film based on the stories by Robert E. Howard and the 1982 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via Atomic Comics), 41-year-old Roland Kickinger (pictured) will play the iconic Cimmerian strongman.

If this scenario sounds familiar, it should: Schwarzenegger was also bodybuilder from Austria, and the film was his big break into Hollywood. But will the new millennium’s Conan also go on to marry a Kennedy and govern California?

terminatorIt gets weirder. Kickinger has still more connections to Schwarzenegger beyond his profession and heritage: He played a cyborg in the recent Terminator Salvation and even portrayed a young Ah-nold in an A&E biopic.

Stick with what works, I suppose.
