‘Star Trek’ exhibit’s stay in Valley cut short one week

April 9th, 2009, 3:27 pm by Jayson Peters

Star Trek: The Exhibition is beaming out of Phoenix a week early, just days ahead of the premiere of the new film in the series.

The exhibit was set to run through May 10, but now it will close May 3 instead. Star Trek, J.J. Abrams’ addition to the franchise, opens in theaters May 8.

Arizona Science Center public relations specialist Ashley Carter said the decision to close one week early was a mutual agreement between the science center and Premiere Exhibitions, the producer of the event.

“We are bringing in LEGO Castle Adventure right after ‘Star Trek’ and in an effort to ensure that LEGO will be up and running for Memorial Day Weekend, because of move-out and move-in of exhibitions, it was decided to close one week early,” she said.

Carter said the exhibition’s contents are next destined for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Another arm of the exhibition, with different sets and features, is visiting the Detroit Science Center.

Fans of Disney and LEGOs should check out this recent story from Wired’s GeekDad blog:

BrickArms brings modern warfare to LEGO world

January 5th, 2009, 12:00 am by Jayson Peters

BrickArms

LEGO doesn’t do guns. That’s obvious. The closest they get to providing firearm accessories for its minifigs is a megaphone that kind of looks like a gun, if you squint. In fact, they don’t do many weapons at all save for medieval armaments and lightsabers for their hugely popular Star Wars line.

BrickArmsSo I was surprised to hear from a friend about BrickArms, a small toy company he learned about at GenCon that specializes in original LEGO-compatible weapons (like the Space Magnum Pistol, above) and custom minifigs (like the Spy Bond, right, with Silenced Spy Pistol and a briefcase concealing a Micro SMG and spare magazine — yes, it’s that detailed). What began as a request in 2006 by the founder’s youngest son for World War II weapons has grown into a business that now produces 31 different weapons, weapons packs, and custom minifigs that are prized by collectors worldwide.

Does LEGO approve? Almost certainly not! But it’s just another example of how the toy has taken on a life of its own and inspired creativity and entrepreneurship.

When I was a kid, we had to play with ACTUAL Legos

I thought the Star Wars video games set in the Lego universe were as cool as it could get, but I was wrong! Lego Indiana Jones AND Lego Batman are on the way to game consoles as well. Lego Indy will feature adventures from Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. While Lego Batman will put you in the Caped Crusader’s (or Robin’s!) shoes facing down Gotham’s nastiest villlians. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy 50th birthday, LEGO!

January 28th, 2008, 8:39 pm by Jayson Peters

LEGO transcends generations, backgrounds and time itself. (And nothing makes a better minefield for unwary parents early in the morning than a bunch of plastic bricks with 2×4 studs.) In recognition of this building block of our culture, Gizmodo presents an illustrated timeline tracing the path of the yellow (and red and blue and green etc.) brick road.

The Age of LEGO is only just beginning!

Fun fact: LEGO TECHNIC sets were first introduced in the year I was born. What was happening in the LEGO universe when you were being constructed?

LEGOs and lightsabers and whips - oh, my

January 9th, 2008, 9:08 pm by Jayson Peters

The Star Wars trilogies are full of fantastic ideas - lightsabers, cyborgs, droids, hyperspace and more. A few months back the History Channel came out with a one-hour special called Star Wars Tech that explored many of these concepts from a realistic perspective - and it’s now available on DVD.

Was it great? No - don’t be too proud of this technological terror. Many would say it’s better than some of the prequels (and I wouldn’t go that far), but it was fun and digestible. And the DVD cover looks nice. Read the rest of this entry »
