A $15 million aquarium is planned for Arizona Mills mall in Tempe, a global leisure giant announced Monday.
Merlin Entertainments, the company that operates Legoland and the Madame Toussauds wax museum in California and the massive Ferris wheel known as the London Eye, will open the 26,000-square-foot Sea Life attraction in spring 2010, according to the company’s press release. The aquarium will have 12 different habitat zones housing more than 30 separate display tanks.
Merlin is owned by the Blackstone Group, a global private equity investment firm.

Can’t afford a real vacation? No problem! As usual, the Internet’s got you covered. Google Maps’ photographers recently took a trip to Legoland California and made it the first U.S. theme park to be mapped on Street View. Just go to www.maps.google.com and put in Legoland California and it’s like you’re there. Now you can take a first-person virtual stroll through the building block wonderland without ever leaving the house, putting on pants or spending a dime. That’s my type of trip!

LEGO has already conquered the video game medium. What’s next, a LEGO movie?
Block on.
Warner Bros. is working with everyone’s favorite Danish toymaker to build a family comedy that will mix live action with animation, according to Variety.
It remains to be seen whether audiences will buy into a LEGO movie like they do interactive experiences like playing with the brick sets and the video games.

The Disney Blog (not an official Disney blog, but a darn good one) talks a bit about the LEGO Toy Story Mini Figures that debuted this week at San Diego Comic-Con.
What caught my eye was the Army Men — complete with a rifle:

Is LEGO further easing their stance against weapons in the hands of its MiniFigs that led to the rise of third-party accessories from companies like BrickArms? Or was the money to be had in an alliance with Disney-Pixar just too good to pass up?

You can celebrate Legoland’s 10th birthday this month without loading up the family and driving to Carlsbad, Calif.
The Arizona Science Center is hosting a model building competition July 15 and showing off what they’re calling the world’s largest Lego birthday cake. It’s nearly 10 feet tall, made of more than 100,000 bricks and features miniature replicas of some of Legoland California’s most popular attractions.
The competition is judged in three age categories: 9 and younger, 10 to 15 and 16 and older. Guests of Arizona Science Center are welcome to build their birthday-themed model anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with a winner from each category to be announced at 4 p.m.
Winners will reportedly receive a prize package valued at more than $300 that includes Lego play materials, a two-day family four-pack of Park Hopper tickets to both Legoland California and Sea Life Aquarium and one-night accommodations.
The science center is at 600 E. Washington St. in downtown Phoenix.

They’re not really teenage anymore, right? But they’re still young at heart.
The Arizona Science Center will come out of its shell on Saturday to welcome the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their Party Bus full of video game stations and ice cream bars. The raucus reptiles are shell-ebrating their 25th birthday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Phoenix. The event is free and open to the public. Read the rest of this entry »

Star Trek: The Exhibition is beaming out of Phoenix a week early, just days ahead of the premiere of the new film in the series.
The exhibit of costumes, props and set replicas from all five Star Trek television series and 10 feature films opened in November at the Arizona Science Center.

The exhibit was set to run through May 10, but now it will close May 3 instead. Star Trek, J.J. Abrams’ addition to the franchise, opens in theaters May 8.
Arizona Science Center public relations specialist Ashley Carter said the decision to close one week early was a mutual agreement between the science center and Premiere Exhibitions, the producer of the event.
“We are bringing in LEGO Castle Adventure right after ‘Star Trek’ and in an effort to ensure that LEGO will be up and running for Memorial Day Weekend, because of move-out and move-in of exhibitions, it was decided to close one week early,” she said.
Carter said the exhibition’s contents are next destined for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Another arm of the exhibition, with different sets and features, is visiting the Detroit Science Center.

Fans of Disney and LEGOs should check out this recent story from Wired’s GeekDad blog:
Disney and LEGO are in plans to make millions of kids (not to mention quite a few grownups) very happy. They’ve announced a strategic partnership that will see LEGO producing sets based on Disney’s vast portfolio. Starting in 2010, LEGO will put out kits based upon the Toy Story, Cars, and upcoming Prince of Persia movie.

LEGO doesn’t do guns. That’s obvious. The closest they get to providing firearm accessories for its minifigs is a megaphone that kind of looks like a gun, if you squint. In fact, they don’t do many weapons at all save for medieval armaments and lightsabers for their hugely popular Star Wars line.
So I was surprised to hear from a friend about BrickArms, a small toy company he learned about at GenCon that specializes in original LEGO-compatible weapons (like the Space Magnum Pistol, above) and custom minifigs (like the Spy Bond, right, with Silenced Spy Pistol and a briefcase concealing a Micro SMG and spare magazine — yes, it’s that detailed). What began as a request in 2006 by the founder’s youngest son for World War II weapons has grown into a business that now produces 31 different weapons, weapons packs, and custom minifigs that are prized by collectors worldwide.
Does LEGO approve? Almost certainly not! But it’s just another example of how the toy has taken on a life of its own and inspired creativity and entrepreneurship.

Go to Toys “R” Us online now through May 17 and you can help choose the Star Wars scene that will be turned into a Toys “R” Us exclusive LEGO set.
