For those about to rock — we sue you! (Image: Electronic Arts)

Last month Activision filed a lawsuit against a San Francisco company to stop the release of its video game Brutal Legend; now Double Fine Productions has counter-sued, claiming the makers of Guitar Hero can’t stand a little battle of the bands.

Danger Mouse relies on piracy for new album

May 18th, 2009, 6:14 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

dm-textsizedProducer, DJ and half of the duo known as Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse continues to show that he’s just a bit more ahead of the times than the recording industry would like. DM (and collaborator Sparklehorse)’s new album, Dark Night of the Soul, is finished, but is unable to be released due to legal wrangling with music giant EMI.

So he has decided to release a book of photographs which serve as visual accompaniment to the songs and a blank recordable CD labeled “‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’” Since all of the songs on the album are already available on the Internet, if one were so inclined, a do-it-yourself version could be easily made. The album can be listened to for free  in its entirety on NPR’s web site.

Who’d have thought all it took to shut up smug old Simon Cowell was an unemployed Scot spinster?

Susan BoyleLast week 47-year-old “never been kissed” Britan’s Got Talent contestant Susan Boyle took the stage to dubious looks and laughter. But within moments of opening her mouth to sing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables the audience was weeping and slack-jawed. Needless to say, Boyle’s performance garnered her a perfect score to usher her into the next round of competition, and has been viewed more than 11 million times on YouTube.

As described on Wired’s Underwire blog:

The band/science experiment ArcAttack channels music through large Tesla coils or DRSSTCs (Dual-Resonant Solid State Tesla Coils). The metallic whine generated by the synchronized coils creates a synthesizer sound the band presents as an audio-visual instrument.

See the Watchmen that’s not in Watchmen

February 13th, 2009, 11:42 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

In an effort to pare down the mammoth scope of Watchmen, director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead, 300) decided early on to axe the “Tales of the Black Freighter” segments from the theatrical release. However, all was not lost, as he recognized that the “Tales” are an integral part of the graphic novel. To appease the fanboys and maintain his cred, he had them done as a separate straight to DVD animated feature. Now we get to see the first trailer and I’m pretty impressed so far. I still have grave reservations about Snyder’s ability to deliver a truly effective Watchmen movie, but hope springs eternal. Read the rest of this entry »
