Brad Pitt’s production company has snagged the film rights to Dark Void, a new video game property from Capcom.
 Brad Pitt
Plan B Entertainment has agreed to develop a sci-fi action franchise for the big screen as a potential starring vehicle for the actor.
Capcom will release Dark Void on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in North America on Jan. 19, 2010, and across Europe on Jan 22. The game is described as “an adrenaline-fuelled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat which centers on Will, a pilot who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle following a routine mission.
“Will wakes up to find himself in ‘The Void,’ an alternate world resembling a primitive earth where aliens with superior technology are planning to take over civilization. Together with a faction of humans who have disappeared into the Void, Will takes on the alien race using their own advanced technology including a high-powered jet pack to defeat them and keep order in the civilized world.”

This was a big week for video game fans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 hit the shelves breaking records for not just video games, but almost every sort of entertainment release. Over 2 million people were online playing the game simultaneously on Thursday. Like any big release, there’s a certain amount of controversy with CoD: MW2.
Staying as spoiler-free as possible, during the course of the game’s storyline a group of criminals commit a terrorist attack and the player, in the role of an American soldier who’s undercover with the group, can take part in this act where numerous innocent civilians are injured and killed. This footage leaked before the game was released and people were outraged.
Having spent the last few days playing through the game’s story mode, I have to say that the outrage is overblown and unjustified. First, even before beginning the game, players are give an option to skip the potentially offensive level if they choose to. Second, and more importantly, despite the shocking nature of the scene, there’s nothing gratuitous about it. The event serves to further the complex story that developer Infinity Ward is attempting to tell. The overall story deals with the hard choices to be made when fighting global terrorism.

First we learn that comic books aren’t all that bad for kids. Now, boosted by the rich historical detail in video games like Assassin’s Creed II (out next week for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) and the popularity of World War II as a setting for combat games, the American Library Association has declared this Saturday to be National Gaming Day at U.S. libraries.
While we’re certainly in a video game renaissance of respectability, old-school is represented as well. Corporate sponsor Hasbro has donated 16,700 sets of games including “Monopoly Deal,” “Pictureka!” the card game and “Scrabble Slam” for the event.

American gamers will be getting second helping of zombie-plague madness this spring when Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition becomes available.
Capcom says the new version of the game, which includes a new scenario called “Lost in Nightmares,” will be released this spring as downloadable content to owners of the blockbuster game via Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network.
In Japan the new edition will be available as a regular game disc at retail outlets, but Capcom said surveys show North American and European fans preferred DLC in a blind taste-test. As Kotaku points out, this conveniently means you can’t sell or trade the game away and just pick up the new and improved version later.

PlayStation 3 owners say a mandatory firmware update has ruined their systems, and they’ve launched a class-action lawsuit seeking compensation and restitution.
According to Courthouse News Service, the upgrade promised new features and improved navigation, but caused the gaming console to crash and rendered controllers inoperable. A subsequent update reportedly failed to solve the problem and caused the system’s Blu-ray player to malfunction.
And let’s face it, that Blu-ray player is the only real reason to own a PS3, right?
One plaintiff said Sony wanted $150 to fix the problem. Sony has stated it’s not a firmware issue, and that repair costs are the responsibility of consumers.
The suit is seeking declaratory relief, compensation and restitution for breach of implied warranty, negligence and unjust enrichment.

Sony today announced it is slashing the price of its 80GB PlayStation 3 gaming console from $399 to $299, and introducing a slimmer 120GB model in September that will also cost $299.
The PS3, which debuted in 2006, has come a long way from its original $599 pricetag. Is reality finally catching up with the video games industry, once deemed recession-proof?
Nintendo is the only company that hasn’t budged on its console prices, but the speculation is that won’t last for long: Sales of the $250 Wii dropped last month for the first time since it launched three years ago, and recent software lineups just haven’t been living up to expectations.
Microsoft dropped the Xbox 360’s price ($80 or $50, depending on the hard drive configuration) around this time last year.

The demo for Eidos’ ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ is out this week and it’s well worth giving a try. I’ve played through it twice and it’s a lot of fun. The demo shows Batman returning the Joker back to Arkham, only to find out it’s an elaborate trap set by the Clown Prince of Crime. Now the Dark Knight must battle his way through a gauntlet of thugs, psychopaths and his greatest foes to retake the most pourous prison in comics. It’s available for free on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or PC, so you’ve got no excuse not to give it a try.

After years of selling people’s unwanted stuff, Bookmans Entertainment Exchange is adding something new. Literally.
 Photo: Bookmans Flickr page
The Arizona chain of used bookstores is now offering factory-sealed video games for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS at all six of its locations.
Titles mentioned in the announcement include Little Big Planet, Ghostbusters and Lego Battles, but that’s just a sampling. They’ll still have plenty of used inventory to choose from, if you’re looking for a deal.
Bookmans offers trade credit and cash for in-demand books, games, movies, music and collectibles.
They have Valley stores at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa and Northern and 19th avenues in Phoenix, plus three locations in Tucson and one in Flagstaff.
The Mesa store is undergoing a renovation (see photo) that will include a cafe when it’s done, but remains open for business during construction.

A new Web site lets video gamers place wagers on their skills, with real money at stake — but it’s not considered online gambling, and it’s legal in 39 states. Just not here in Arizona.
According to an Associated Press report, this is one of only 11 states that ban the playing of video games for cash. The others are Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Tennessee and Vermont.
BringIt.com, which is about to emerge from beta testing, lets players challenge other gamers for money. The site bills itself as an enterprise built around games of skill and not chance, like online poker. Sign up is free to ages 18 and older. They make money by taking a 10 percent cut from wagers and a $4 withdrawal fee from winners. (ESPN reports that bets are limited to $100,000.)
The Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2 and 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are supported. You can put your money where your mouth is with games like Street Fighter IV, Mario Kart Wii, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rock Band 2, Halo 3, and Major League Baseball 2K9.
Don’t tell Pete Rose about that last one.
