PS3 owners sue Sony over crippling firmware update

October 5th, 2009, 10:14 pm by Jayson Peters

ps-3PlayStation 3 owners say a mandatory firmware update has ruined their systems, and they’ve launched a class-action lawsuit seeking compensation and restitution.

According to Courthouse News Service, the upgrade promised new features and improved navigation, but caused the gaming console to crash and rendered controllers inoperable. A subsequent update reportedly failed to solve the problem and caused the system’s Blu-ray player to malfunction.

And let’s face it, that Blu-ray player is the only real reason to own a PS3, right?

One plaintiff said Sony wanted $150 to fix the problem. Sony has stated it’s not a firmware issue, and that repair costs are the responsibility of consumers.

The suit is seeking declaratory relief, compensation and restitution for breach of implied warranty, negligence and unjust enrichment.

Sony today announced it is slashing the price of its 80GB PlayStation 3 gaming console from $399 to $299, and introducing a slimmer 120GB model in September that will also cost $299.

The PS3, which debuted in 2006, has come a long way from its original $599 pricetag. Is reality finally catching up with the video games industry, once deemed recession-proof?

Nintendo is the only company that hasn’t budged on its console prices, but the speculation is that won’t last for long: Sales of the $250 Wii dropped last month for the first time since it launched three years ago, and recent software lineups just haven’t been living up to expectations.

Microsoft dropped the Xbox 360’s price ($80 or $50, depending on the hard drive configuration) around this time last year.

‘Arkham Asylum’ demo is crazy good

August 7th, 2009, 3:44 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

batmanaaThe demo for Eidos’ ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ is out this week and it’s well worth giving a try. I’ve played through it twice and it’s a lot of fun. The demo shows Batman returning the Joker back to Arkham, only to find out it’s an elaborate trap set by the Clown Prince of Crime. Now the Dark Knight must battle his way through a gauntlet of thugs, psychopaths and his greatest foes to retake the most pourous prison in comics. It’s available for free on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or PC, so you’ve got no excuse not to give it a try.

The Arizona chain of used bookstores is now offering factory-sealed video games for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS at all six of its locations.

Titles mentioned in the announcement include Little Big Planet, Ghostbusters and Lego Battles, but that’s just a sampling. They’ll still have plenty of used inventory to choose from, if you’re looking for a deal.

Bookmans offers trade credit and cash for in-demand books, games, movies, music and collectibles.

They have Valley stores at Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue in Mesa and Northern and 19th avenues in Phoenix, plus three locations in Tucson and one in Flagstaff.

The Mesa store is undergoing a renovation (see photo) that will include a cafe when it’s done, but remains open for business during construction.

Video game betting site ready to roll — but not here

July 30th, 2009, 10:11 am by Jayson Peters

A new Web site lets video gamers place wagers on their skills, with real money at stake — but it’s not considered online gambling, and it’s legal in 39 states. Just not here in Arizona.

According to an Associated Press report, this is one of only 11 states that ban the playing of video games for cash. The others are Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Montana, Tennessee and Vermont.

online video game betting gambling wagering bringit.comBringIt.com, which is about to emerge from beta testing, lets players challenge other gamers for money. The site bills itself as an enterprise built around games of skill and not chance, like online poker. Sign up is free to ages 18 and older. They make money by taking a 10 percent cut from wagers and a $4 withdrawal fee from winners. (ESPN reports that bets are limited to $100,000.)

The Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2 and 3 and Xbox 360 consoles are supported. You can put your money where your mouth is with games like Street Fighter IV, Mario Kart Wii, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Rock Band 2, Halo 3, and Major League Baseball 2K9.

Don’t tell Pete Rose about that last one.

Despite early leaks, Sony still has a few E3 surprises

June 2nd, 2009, 6:33 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

go-text

The last of the three major gaming companies to present at E3, Sony had a few interesting items to announce. First up, they announced a new version of the PSP, their portable system, called the PSP Go. It looks to be a smaller and lighter version of the handheld console. It will be released on October 1 and retail for $250. The new PSP was known to be in the pipeline for sometime now, but it’s nice to see some additional details to it.

Like Microsoft, Sony is jumping on the motion-activated controller bandwagon. Sony’s version will consist of two wands that work in conjunction with the PlayStation camera to create increased accuracy and precision. The early demo showcased using the wands to draw, construct items,  control weapons such as a sword and shield or bow and arrow. It should see the light of day some time next year.

Various announced games of note are after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »
