Dude, where’s my card? ‘Stoner Fluxx’ coming back into print

Fluxx

A game of Fluxx

The creators of the ever-changing card game Fluxx are expanding into hazy territory.

Fully Baked Ideas, a new imprint of the family friendly games company Looney Labs, will publish an updated edition of the once controversial and now out-of-print Stoner Fluxx. The new company’s official site promises that 5 percent of the proceeds from the game’s sale will be donated to organizations that actively support the end of marijuana prohibition in the United States.

Other editions of the game published by Looney include Zombie Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx and the recently released Martian Fluxx. All versions of the game feature the same basic mechanic: Each card played can change the rules or goal of the game, making sure it’s a different experience every time.

Looney explains that a spin-off brand was necessary “to make sure children are not accidentally exposed to adult themes on our family games web site.” Fully Baked’s new edition of Stoner Fluxx will be followed at some point by the recently announced Drinking Fluxx.

Today marks the end of Reading Rainbow’s 26-year run on public television. Only Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street have aired on PBS longer.

The Emmy award-winning show, hosted by actor LeVar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots), featured children’s books and literary reviews by and for kids. It has struggled to stay on the air for years, sometimes producing only a handful of episodes per season as funding dried up. Now, as National Public Radio reports, neither PBS nor the Corporation for Public Broadcasting can afford to renew the broadcast rights.

That’s just a shame. Read the rest of this entry »

A disturbing convergence

July 25th, 2009, 11:27 pm by Jayson Peters

We’ve already reported that at least one e-tailer has proved it has both the ability and the guts to snatch back content you thought you wanted (Amazon embraces the Orwellian spirit and UPDATE: Orwell e-books yanked from Kindles were bootlegs, July 17).

Now the U.S. government appears to be on the verge of establishing a squad of truth police if not Thought Police, if Tribune columnist Austin Hill is to be believed (Obama appointee wants control of web speech, July 25).

Obama: Yes We Can … sell comic books!

February 6th, 2009, 12:10 am by Jayson Peters

Marvel is seeking a fifth printing of Amazing Spider-Man #583, which contains a five-page story featuring  President Barack Obama. Already in a fourth printing is IDW’s bio-comic Presidential Material: Barack Obama, which originally shipped in October, and the Savage Dragon book in which Erik Larsen had his protagonist endorse Obama for president.

Speaking of Larsen, he will appear Feb. 25 at Atomic Comics’ Mesa location, 1120 S. Country Club Dr., No. 105, from 1 to 4 p.m. to sign copies of Savage Dragon. Joining him will be Rob Liefeld, who will sign Youngblood #8, sporting an Obama cover and containing a six-page backup by the series creator in which a fictitious President Obama announces his very first superhero initiative: an all-new, hand-picked Youngblood team leading to a May shipping relaunch as Liefeld takes over the artistic reins. Read more about the event in its flier at Atomic’s Web site.

Commander in Chief computer game Barack Obama Inauguration DayThink you can do better than Barack Obama on issues such as unemployment, the environment, social security, or foreign relations? Here’s your chance! Commander in Chief, a new PC game that lets players make critical presidential decisions, goes on sale today, the same day that Obama is inaugurated the 44th president of the United States.

Help me Wolf Blitzer - you’re my only hope!

November 5th, 2008, 10:24 pm by Jayson Peters

Forget the election and CNN’s “Magic Wall” — did you see this?

YouTube Preview Image

The journalistic value of such a tool is debatable, but CNN rolled out some pretty impressive 3-D hologram tech on Election Night. In the clip above, veteran anchorman Wolf Blitzer in New York carries on a real-time conversation with reporter Jessica Yellin in Chicago “via hologram.” It’s a feat of technical wizardry that takes dozens of cameras and computers to pull off. And Yellin bears no small resemblance to Princess Leia’s plaintive recording in Star Wars: “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi — you’re my only hope!” Read the rest of this entry »

McCain campaign vs. the gamer geeks?

August 20th, 2008, 2:13 pm by Jayson Peters

Dungeons and Dragons dice (Associated Press photo)A blogger for John McCain’s presidential campaign recently took some shots at a liberal blog raising the possibility that McCain stole one of his POW stories from Gulag Archipelago author Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who died earlier this month. Michael Goldfarb for some reason decided to include fans of a fantasy roleplaying game in his retort — and because it’s the Internet, you can bet he got a geeky earful from players right away.
