July 9th, 2009, 12:02 am by Jayson Peters

A staff member of Mesa-based Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, which is developing the online roleplaying game Stargate Worlds, recently posted some answers to fan questions on the game’s official message boards, giving hope that the project is indeed still kicking. The employee, identified as “Khestral,” gives a picture of the game’s story elements, characters and gameplay.

In April of this year, the company was reported to be facing significant financial difficulties — as so many have during the recession — but insisted development was progressing along with beta testing and that deals were in the works to keep it that way. The company told the fan e-zine GateWorld that its publicity efforts were in a “dark period.” Indeed, the last press release on the game’s Web site is dated May 4, 2009, and it concerns TV and movie star Frankie Muniz’ participation in the game’s formula racing team. D&D updates older products for new edition

July 7th, 2009, 11:05 am by Jayson Peters

Dungeons and Dragons Exemplars of EvilWizards of the Coast is planning a series of updates to Dungeons & Dragons supplements and adventure modules produced near the end of 3rd Edition’s lifespan that will make them more useful to players of the newer 4th Edition.

The following 3.5-version products will “go Fourth” this month:

  • Exemplars of Evil
  • Elder Evils
  • Fortress of the Yuan-ti
  • Stormreach
  • Dragons of Eberron
  • Anauroch

D&D creative manager Chris Perkins noted in the official game forum: “Normally I’d say ‘Better late than never,’ but these are pretty damn late. Again, profuse apologies. We suck.” Supplements published during the transition between editions, before the new rules were out, carried a logo that indicated they would be compatible with 4th Edition.

‘Doctor Who’ RPG set for fall release

June 24th, 2009, 9:03 pm by Jayson Peters

whoA roleplaying game based on the hit British sci-fi series Doctor Who will hit hobby stores this fall.

Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space will be available in October. Published by Cubicle 7, the release is a deluxe box set that contains a 144-page Gamemaster’s Guide, an 86-page Player’s Guide, a 30-page Adventures Book, a four-page Quick Start Guide, pregenerated character sheets, blank character sheets, gadget sheets, tokens and dice.

Hopefully, like the Doctor’s TARDIS, the box will be both indestructible and bigger on the inside than it is on the outside — because it will set you back $59.95.

Come to think of it, why isn’t the “deluxe” packaging in the shape of a British police call box, also like the TARDIS?

This is the third official tabletop RPG based on Doctor Who: FASA published one in the ’80s and Virgin in the ’90s. The new game naturally focuses on the 2005 relaunch of the classic series that ran from 1963-89. But with 45 years of accumulated lore from TV episodes, original novels and plays and two spinoffs to date, there is plenty of material to support a full range of gaming supplements — if the market is there for them.

Now, when is somebody going to get around to making a decent video game based on Doctor Who?

‘Star Trek Online’ goes to the movies?

June 15th, 2009, 3:00 pm by Jayson Peters

evilspockAh, canon. It can be such a tricky thing in a genre that takes itself so seriously. Take this update on the official Web site for the upcoming online roleplaying game Star Trek Online:

You may be curious to know how the new Star Trek movie affects Star Trek Online. Wonder no further, as we’ve put together a handy-dandy graphical timeline for your perusal. Also included is a written explanation that explains exactly how the movie and STO can coexist. Give it a look here.

Basically, Star Trek Online was in production before the recent Star Trek feature film, and now game developer Cryptic/Infogrames/Atari is in the position of having to make their futuristic universe make sense when viewed in context of the galaxy-shaking events of the movie. When this happens, whether in film, comics, novels, games, what-have-you, the resolution usually involves a major cop-out, or things become so complicated as to make one wonder how anyone is supposed to have any fun anymore.
