nup_134426_0008There are four words you don’t see together very often.

Syfy, the new identity of the former Sci Fi Channel, is claiming impressive gains both among total viewers and women ages 25-54 since relaunching one month ago.

The network, owned by NBC Universal, scored the best July in its 17-year history with the demographic groups, a feat it attributes to the new series Warehouse 13 and returning hit Eureka.

Judge rules against family of ‘Superman’ creator

July 9th, 2009, 8:05 am by Jayson Peters

action1According to a report by Michael Hinman at Airlock Alpha, the family of late Superman creator Jerry Siegel will have to be happy with the royalties they’re getting now for the iconic comic book character. A U.S. District Court judge said Warner Bros. and DC Comics have fulfilled their obligations to the Siegels under a profit-sharing agreement for the 2006 movie Superman Returns and the CW series Smallville. It’s just the latest in a long line of legal battles for the heirs, including a federal court decision last year to awarded them half of the copyright to the Superman material in Action Comics No. 1.

‘Merlin’ materializes Sunday on NBC

NBC picks up a hit BBC drama series when it debuts Merlin on Sunday. The series, which has earned a second season in the U.K., has been compared to Smallville for the way it took an established mythology and turned it on its head.

In the series premiere, the character of Merlin is a far cry from the wizard of legend:

With a letter from his mother revealing his innate ability to practice magic, Merlin (Colin Morgan) arrives in the city of Camelot to find Gaius (Richard Wilson), the Court Physician. Gaius takes Merlin under his wing to keep him out of trouble. Eager to discover his new surroundings, Merlin sets out to see the sites of Camelot and meets Arthur (Bradley James), a young bully who challenges him to a duel. After being thrown in jail for standing up to Arthur, Merlin attracts the attention of others in Camelot, including Gwen (Angel Coulby), Morgana’s (Katie McGrath) young maid, and most importantly King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who will forever change the course of Merlin’s destiny.

Green Arrow joins ‘Smallville’ main cast

June 16th, 2008, 1:23 am by Jayson Peters

1justinhartley.jpgThe CW’s Smallville has lost two of its biggest stars going into season eight — Michael Rosembaum as Lex Luthor and Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang — and the freakishly hot Laura Vandervoort (Kara Zor-El/Kent) has been downgraded from series regular to recurring character. But it’s about to get a shot in the arm to both up its hero quotient and keep the billionaire playboy theme going strong.

E! Online reports that Justin Hartley, aka Oliver Queen/the Green Arrow, is going full time. This should keep some aspect of the Veritas storyline alive — that’s the secret society to which Lex’s and Oliver’s parents belonged, formed to control “the Traveler,” aka Clark Kent (Tom Welling).

A cast blast from the past on ‘Smallville’

March 12th, 2008, 3:20 pm by Jayson Peters

smallvillepete0313.jpgIf you’ve been watching Smallville from way back, you remember the very first person to learn Clark Kent’s (Tom Welling) Super secret: faithful friend Pete Ross (Sam Jones III, right). He eventually couldn’t deal and left Smallville for the big city (Wichita!), ne’er to be seen again.

Until now! Now that half the planet knows about Clark’s alien powers, he’s back (after numerous guest appearances on ER) in the March 13 episode as a roadie for the real-life band One Republic. Attending the concert is one Kara Zor-El/Kent and one Jimmy Olsen (Laura Vandervoort, Aaron Ashmore) - both of whom joined Clark’s entourage long after Pete’s departure.

This time, it’s Pete’s turn to play around with superpowers after being exposed to Kryptonite gum!

Smallville airs 7 p.m. Thursdays on The CW.
