There’s good news for fans of actor, author and all-around geek icon Bruce Campbell (”Army of Darkness”, “Bubba-Ho-Tep”). In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, he mentioned that Spider-Man 4 begins shooting in January and that he will have a “major part” in the film. Exactly what his role will be remains uncertain.

Campbell has certainly earned the role. He’s already staked out his place in Spider-Man’s cinematic world with notable cameos in all three of the web-slinger’s films to date. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi is a big fan of the actor. The two of them have worked together several times, going all the way back to 1981’s cult classic “Evil Dead.”

It may not sell many  more tickets, but fans are sure to agree, whatever his role, more of Campbell can only be a good thing.

If you thought a musical based on your friendly neighborhood web-slinger was too good to be true — you may yet be right.

“Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark,” a lavish Broadway-bound musical directed by Julie Taymor (”The Lion King”) and scored by U2’s Bono and The Edge, seems to be caught in a sudden web of financial difficulties. Work has been suspended until cash can begin flowing again.

Previews were set to begin in Feburary, with Evan Rachel Wood as Mary Jane Watson and Alan Cumming as Norman Osborn/The Green Goblin.

Casting for Spidey himself hasn’t been announced.

Raimi makes ‘Warcraft’

July 21st, 2009, 11:31 pm by Jayson Peters

Spider-Man writer-director Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the movie adaptation of World of Warcraft, according to Variety. The film is being bankrolled and distributed by Warner Bros. and produced by Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment, which makes the popular online roleplaying game.

Raimi’s experience producing TV’s Hercules, Xena: Warrior Princess and, more recently, Legend of the Seeker should come in handy for this long-awaited fantasy project.

Regeneration or Degeneration?

July 2nd, 2009, 5:14 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Wired is reporting that cellular biologists from the Max Planck Institute are making headway in their studies of the regenerative abilities of salamanders. They’re hopeful these advances can be used to help humans regrow missing limbs  as well.

This is a nice thought, but we all know how this is going to end. Those scientists would know as well, if only they kept up on the comic book lore. Over 45 years ago in The Amazing Spider-Man #6, Dr. Curt Connors tried this very experiment using reptile DNA. He successfully regrew his missing arm, but was also transformed into The Lizard. Connors has been cured of his affliction and relapsed to battle Spider-Man countless times. He’s even a front-runner to face off against the web-spinner in the next Spider-Man movie. Is this really the sort of menace we want to introduce into the world?

And you thought your job was bad…

June 18th, 2009, 5:40 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Here’s a story to make you feel better about your job. The AP is reporting that workers cleaning up Washington’s Hanford nuclear reactor have come across radioactive wasp nests. The wasps constructed the hives out of “fairly highly contaminated” mud containing radioactive cesium and cobalt. While most of the wasps have moved out, there could be thousands of nests to be cleaned out. This just goes to show that no matter how bad your job is, it can always get worse.

More proof that comic books can save the world

Various news agencies are reporting the story of a firefighter who went above and beyond normal heroics into superheroics. An 11 year-old autistic boy, distressed during his first day at a new school, climbed out a window onto a third story ledge. After hearing the boy was a big fan of superheroes, Thai firefighter Somchai Yoosabai went back to his station, dressed up as Spider-Man and coaxed the child safely back inside.

I completely understand the boy’s decision to come back in.  I’ve followed women dressed as comic book characters all over the San Diego Comic-Con myself, so I totally understand the allure of a costume.

A double dose of Spidey movies?

September 6th, 2008, 10:04 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Several news outlets, including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, are reporting that director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire are close to signing up for more Spider-Man movies.
