‘Star Trek Online’ goes to the movies?

June 15th, 2009, 3:00 pm by Jayson Peters

evilspockAh, canon. It can be such a tricky thing in a genre that takes itself so seriously. Take this update on the official Web site for the upcoming online roleplaying game Star Trek Online:

You may be curious to know how the new Star Trek movie affects Star Trek Online. Wonder no further, as we’ve put together a handy-dandy graphical timeline for your perusal. Also included is a written explanation that explains exactly how the movie and STO can coexist. Give it a look here.

Basically, Star Trek Online was in production before the recent Star Trek feature film, and now game developer Cryptic/Infogrames/Atari is in the position of having to make their futuristic universe make sense when viewed in context of the galaxy-shaking events of the movie. When this happens, whether in film, comics, novels, games, what-have-you, the resolution usually involves a major cop-out, or things become so complicated as to make one wonder how anyone is supposed to have any fun anymore. Just this past December, Infogrames acquired Cryptic Studios, the developer behind the upcoming roleplaying games Champions Online and Star Trek Online.

The financial report also reveals for the first time an expected release date for Trek Online: It’s due out by the end of Atari’s fiscal year, which is March 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

The Empire strikes back against a resurgent ‘Star Trek’

May 12th, 2009, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

warsvtrek

Star Trek may be king of the box office this week, but the Emperor is taking appropriate steps to make sure we know he is still firmly in control of everything else.

It’s kinda fake and by no means as entertaining or as polished as the classic Troops, but this fan video shows who emerges unscathed when the Final Frontier runs afoul of the Galaxy Far, Far Away:

STAR TREK

ZACHARY QUINTO AS SPOCK AND CHRIS PINE AS JAMES T. KIRK

Star Trek lives.

It took 11 tries, but someone finally managed to make a movie that completely captures the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s classic “Wagon Train to the stars.”

And it’s even one of the odd-numbered ones!

J.J. Abrams has not only reinvented the original crew of the Starship Enterprise with fresh faces like Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, he’s also managed to stay true to four decades of accumulated lore. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Physics of Star Trek’ author gives free lecture on Sunday

May 2nd, 2009, 12:02 am by Jayson Peters

The bargains just keep on coming at warp speed from the Arizona Science Center.

Last week it was free admission (courtesy of Fry’s Marketplace). This weekend, among a full slate of Astronomy Day 2009 events, the Dorrance Planetarium will offer free shows midnight Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

kraussBut that’s not all! Internationally known physicist Lawrence Krauss (pictured), author of the bestselling book The Physics of Star Trek, will use the fictional Federation universe as a launching pad to explain modern physics to the rest of us. Krauss’ lecture, 12:30 p.m. Sunday, is free with paid admission to the science center.

Red alert! Sunday is also the final day of the traveling Star Trek: The Exhibition.

The Arizona Science Center is located at 600 E. Washington St. in downtown Phoenix.

‘The Cage’ re-gilded: ‘Star Trek’ pilot episode remastered

April 30th, 2009, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

Vina, Capt. Pike and Number OneWhile J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek opening May 8 in theaters is getting a lot of attention, this weekend will see another treat for fans: the classic sci-fi franchise’s original pilot episode will air in syndication for the first time in remastered form with updated special effects.

Something the two productions have in common: no William Shatner as Capt. Kirk to be seen anywhere.

“The Cage,” stars Jeffrey Hunter as USS Enterprise Capt. Christopher Pike, Leonard Nimoy as science officer Mr. Spock and Majel Barrett as the ship’s unnamed first officer, referred to only as “Number One.”

The episode will air noon Sunday, May 3, on KASW, the Valley’s CW affiliate (Channel 6 for Cox Cable subscribers).

For many years, the 1964 pilot, rejected by NBC, was a “lost” episode in Trek history — it didn’t air on television in its proper form until 1988, instead being chopped up and repurposed as part of the 1966 original series episode “The Menagerie.” That story uses the events of “The Cage” as a backdrop for the court martial of Mr. Spock after he abducts his former captain Pike and whisks him and Kirk’s Enterprise away to the forbidden world of Talos IV for mysterious reasons he is reluctant to discuss.

I recently chatted with Michael Okuda, one of the creative producers for the remastered episodes, whom I met briefly in November at the opening of Star Trek: The Exhibition at the Arizona Science Center. (That exhibit, by the way, ends Sunday.)

To help tide us over until Green Lantern hits the big-screen, we’ve got the animated version, Green Lantern: First Flight. It’s scheduled to hit stores this summer and DC Universe has recently released a trailer for it.

There’s even some news on the live-action GL front. The Hollywood Reporter announced the movie is headed to Sydney, Australia to shoot in November. Filmmakers are hoping to take advantage of a weakening Australian dollar and a 15% government subsidy provided by the Aussies. Pre-production on the 150 million dollar film is scheduled to begin this summer, with a planned release date of December 2010.

Casino Royale director Martin Campbell will be directing the film. Casting still remains a mystery; though Chris Pine, Captain James Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek movie, is rumored to be in the running for the lead Lantern position.

‘Star Trek’ exhibit’s stay in Valley cut short one week

Star Trek: The Exhibition is beaming out of Phoenix a week early, just days ahead of the premiere of the new film in the series.

The exhibit was set to run through May 10, but now it will close May 3 instead. Star Trek, J.J. Abrams’ addition to the franchise, opens in theaters May 8.

Arizona Science Center public relations specialist Ashley Carter said the decision to close one week early was a mutual agreement between the science center and Premiere Exhibitions, the producer of the event.

“We are bringing in LEGO Castle Adventure right after ‘Star Trek’ and in an effort to ensure that LEGO will be up and running for Memorial Day Weekend, because of move-out and move-in of exhibitions, it was decided to close one week early,” she said.

Carter said the exhibition’s contents are next destined for the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Another arm of the exhibition, with different sets and features, is visiting the Detroit Science Center.
