Join the glorious Klingon Empire — or else

October 26th, 2009, 10:55 am by Jayson Peters

The twisted souls over at io9 posit that this animated Klingon propaganda film may be a viral promotion for the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek. But even if it’s just fan media, it’s fun to watch:

Star Trek red uniform redshirt security officer Paramount CBSNote: This post originally appeared on Sept. 1, 2008.

In honor of Labor Day, today we salute the redshirts: those thankless legions of faceless Starfleet security officers who boldly go in front of their captain … and usually pay the price. Very early in the episode.

As the Klingons say: “Today is a good day to die!”

Rocky Mountain high?

August 26th, 2009, 9:47 am by Jayson Peters

Ah, Colorado. Crisp mountain air, meth-contaminated comics books and armed robbery — meddling kid and Klingon style!

Investigators this week announced they have broken up a massive methamphetamine ring that brought weekly drug shipments to the Denver area through Phoenix, then laundered the profits with half a million dollars’ worth of collectible comics books — including some Superman and Batman first editions. The fiends! (Bagged as they were or not, I wonder if those valuable books are now worthless after exposure to the harsh chemicals used to make meth?)

shaggybatleth1Also this week, the FBI dubbed a bank robber in more than a dozen hits in Arizona and Colorado “The Shaggy Bandit” for his resemblance (?) to the hirsute character from “Scooby-Doo.”

Reading that story led me to this blog post about weird weapons used by Colorado Springs criminals, which mentioned a story from earlier this year about a convenience store robbery in which a Klingon Bat’leth sword was used.

Is Colorado becoming a nexus of the bizarre?

LeVar Burton

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots star and Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton is recovering from minor injuries he received in a car crash on July 13. The Associated Press reports that the 52-year-old actor’s Mercedes was struck by a Scion driven by a 74-year-old woman, and three parked vehicles were damaged in the chain reaction.

‘Mythbusters’ to prove Capt. Kirk kicks butt

July 12th, 2009, 8:51 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

gorncannon-sizedThe always excellent Discovery Channel show, Mythbusters, is going to test the accuracy of one of the greatest episodes of Star Trek ever: “Arena”. This is the episode in which Captain Kirk is kidnapped by aliens and forced to face off against an implacable foe, the Gorn. He eventually defeats the creature by channeling his inner MacGyver and creating a makeshift cannon out of items in the local environment to blast the villainous lizard-creature. Mythbusters cast member Grant Imahara confirmed via his Twitter feed that crew will determine the plausibility of creating just such a cannon.
