Is the time of making movies Down Under over?

October 18th, 2009, 3:23 pm by Jayson Peters

hal-greenlanternProduction of Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern has pulled up stakes from Australia, part of an overall decision by the movie studio to reassess its overseas filming operations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The reason is the power of green — or the lack thereof. As the falling U.S. dollar continues its slide, the once-sound financial strategy to film Down Under has become more expensive. George Lucas took production of his Star Wars prequels to the then-new Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. In 1998, it was a bargain.

With a live-action Star Wars television series on the way, the land of koalas and kangaroos has been floated as a possible base of operations for that lucrative venture — but these days even Lucas isn’t so sure. Read the rest of this entry »

The Force is with the practical jokers at ThinkGeek

October 8th, 2009, 12:02 am by Jayson Peters

Tauntaun sleeping bagJust in time for your holiday shopping, ThinkGeek has delivered on its promise to try and make its April Fools’ prank of a Star Wars Tauntaun sleeping bag a reality.

According to the e-tailer’s website, the not-so-funny-now item should be available in limited quantities in early November. Currently priced at $99.99 (though that may be just a placeholder amount), the item is described as having an inner lining of cozy “intestines” and a lightsaber zipper pull.

Supplies are sure to vanish faster than lightspeed — so don’t waste any time with your friends at Tosche Station, OK?

You can breathe easy: No Darth Vader porn — for now

October 5th, 2009, 3:33 pm by Jayson Peters

vaderOh, David Prowse — it’s just not a good week for you, is it?

The actor and former bodybuilder who wore the Sith suit in the original Star Wars trilogy was on location at an English bungalow when police forces raided the set. They’d been tipped off by neighbor who saw the camera and lighting equipment being hauled into the home and naturally assumed it was being used in the production of a skin flick.

What was really being filmed, according to the U.K.’s Metro, is a movie called The Kindness of Strangers; the director’s ex-husband owns the Staffordshire home.

Last week the BBC reported Mr. Prowse broke down on a busy English highway and needed police assistance (or, “used the Force”) to make it to a convention appearance. Now in his 70s, the actor, who was once also a pedestrian safety spokesman, is certainly maintaining a healthy relationship with British law enforcement personnel. That, or he has one of the most unique publicists in the realm.

Everybody needs a little help sometime. Even the Dark Lord of the Sith.

David Prowse, who wore the black cape and helmet of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, recently needed to call upon a force of a different kind when his Mercedes (once owned by R2-D2 performer Kenny Baker, by the way) broke down on the M1 highway in Northamptonshire, England.

BBC News reports that the towering, 72-year-old former bodybuilder broke down en route to a reunion of the 501st UK Garrison costuming and charity group. He was intimidated by the speed and sound of passing traffic, so he retreated behind a safety barrier until help could arrive from the highway patrol.

Prowse was only the brawny body of Darth Vader; actor James Earl Jones provided the imposing voice to match.

Ironically, Prowse is also famous for portraying the “Green Cross Code Man,” a superhero character created to teach pedestrian safety to children. He received MBE honors from Queen Elizabeth in 2000 for the public service.

C-3PO tweets as ‘Star Wars in Concert’ begins U.S. tour

October 1st, 2009, 10:50 pm by Jayson Peters

o2__ad_head_Anthony Daniels, who was the voice of C-3PO in all six Star Wars films and is now traveling the country with “Star Wars in Concert,” has added Twitter to his famed 6 million forms of communication. The British actor, who narrates the musical tribute to the saga at 2 and 7 p.m. Sunday at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, uses the handle ADaniels3PO.

His first words to online followers: “Today my first tweet and tonight my first performance with Star Wars In Concert in the U.S.!”

He then went on to tweet during dress rehearsal, intermission and immediately after his Thursday’s performance at Anaheim’s Honda Center, the start of a whirlwind U.S. tour that doesn’t let up until December.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Daniels last month when he stopped in the Valley to promote the event and to check out Jobing.com Arena’s facilities. He’s very generous with his time — a 25-minute interview with four reporters turned into 45 minutes before we knew it, and I got the impression he could have gone on — and he has truly come to appreciate what his character means to generations of fans worldwide.

You can read my full interview with Anthony Daniels here and, in part, in Friday’s Take2 section of the Tribune.

‘I sense a great disturbance on the server’

“As if a million page view requests cried out at once, and were suddenly silenced.” Apologies to the great Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi for the paraphrasing, but it seems particularly appropriate.

Video game company Bioware opened up beta tester applications for their upcoming online role-playing game, “Star Wars: The Old Republic.” Gamers promptly hammered the page with requests causing Bioware to pull it down.

Currently, it reads “We are making adjustments to the site due to the overwhelming response to the testing announcement. Please be patient and check back later.” There’s still a long way to go, but given the strength of the Star Wars universe combined with Bioware’s incredible track record and this game has a chance to be something very special. It might even be the first real competitor to the online juggernaut that is “World of Warcraft.”

Local events: ‘Star Wars’ deconstructed — the LEGO way

September 28th, 2009, 4:13 pm by Jayson Peters

bookA couple of events coming to the Valley next month will help to usher in the release of DK Publishing’s LEGO Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, due out Monday, Oct. 5.

The LEGO Store at Chandler Fashion Center will be invaded by Imperial stormtroopers for its event, 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 10. In addition, there will be giveaways of Star Wars-related LEGO toys.

The same day and time, Barnes & Noble at Desert Ridge Marketplace, 21001 N. Tatum Blvd., Phoenix, will hold a costume contest, LEGO building activities, games raffles and more.

If you’re in another geographical area, check the book’s official site to find a similar event near you.

It’s no Tatooine: C-3PO’s impressions of the Valley

September 27th, 2009, 12:04 am by Jayson Peters

The last part of my interview with “Star Wars in Concert” narrator and C-3PO performer Anthony Daniels:

When Anthony Daniels visited the Valley Sept. 14 to promote his Oct. 4 appearance for “Star Wars in Concert” at Glendale’s Jobing.com Arena and get a feel for the venue, he found a warm welcome — but not warm enough.

He found the “ice palace,” as he called it, chilly in contrast to the triple-digit temperatures that greeted him on his first visit to Phoenix, and was graciously worried that the four local journalists meeting with him would be unconfortable!

We assured him it was a welcome respite from the heat, and settled in for a nice, long chat with the actor. Read the rest of this entry »
