Apple’s new mobile apps are amazing

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008 by Scott Kirchhofer

Apple boosted the capabilities and usefulness of the iPhone and iPod touch last Friday with the release of third-party applications. The App Store on iTunes has more than 800 native applications, including over 200 offered for free. Most of the apps cost less than $10. Here are a few that I’ve downloaded and really like.

E3 Media and Business Summit (formerly known as Electronic Entertainment Expo)One of the biggest video game publicity events is happening this week at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Los Angeles. That means lots of gaming news, updates and a sick amount of eye candy.

Yesterday, Scott Kirchhofer gave you the rundown on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 announcements, and he’ll be back later today with a roundup of Sony’s news. I’m here to summarize Nintendo’s morning press conference. It’s already been a big year for Nintendo, and many folks were wondering if they’d have anything left to announce. But despite the much-anticipated early arrivals of Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit, they’re not out of the game yet.

Podcasts for Geeks (is that an oxymoron?) Part I

Monday, July 7th, 2008 by Jayson Peters

Podcasts are a great way for busy geeks to stay on top of their obsessions when they’re stuck in traffic (or a cubicle). A good podcast can encapsulate your favorite TV or radio show and even have that feel of “old-timey” radio. They’re also a great way for independent producers of various content to get their stuff “out there.” All you need to get your silky voice out there is a computer, some kind of compatible recording equipment and a program like GarageBand or Audacity. Internet domain names: Anything goes - for a price

Friday, June 27th, 2008 by Scott Kirchhofer

Board members of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) are seen during a vote in Paris, Thursday, June 26, 2008. The Internet’s key oversight agency relaxed rules Thursday to permit the introduction of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of new Internet domain names to join “.com,” making the first sweeping changes in the network’s 25-year-old addressing system. The way we navigate the Internet is about to change.

ICANN, the Internet’s “top-level” domain name regulator, voted unanimously Thursday to relax the rules on domain names like “.com” and “.net”, freeing new websites to use any extension imaginable — for a hefty price. (more…)

Cyborg monkeys will be our masters

Friday, May 30th, 2008 by Chris "KeL" Adams

Once again scientists hasten the demise of mankind’s dominion over the Earth. CNN is reporting that scientists “have trained a group of monkeys to feed themselves marshmallows using a robot arm controlled by sensors implanted in their brains”. I’d like to know who thought this was a good idea.

Putting the ‘X’ in Xbox: The role of sex in gaming

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008 by Jayson Peters

Daniel Floyd of the Savannah College of Art and Design put together this stimulating presentation on the role of sex in gaming’s history and its future. It’s something every art form has to deal with when it “grows up.”

Floyd takes a very mature approach to dealing with the subject — mature as in academic and real, not giggity-giggity-giggity.

That said, in the interest of full disclosure the presentation is best reviewed by parents before it reaches young eyes and ears. (There is some illustrative cheesecake and a few adult utterances.)

Video after the jump. (more…)

Wii Fit review: A solid workout for your body and mind

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 by Scott Kirchhofer

The Wii Fit hit stores yesterday in Nintendo’s attempt to help us all lose some weight, get fit and have fun. After trying out the four main activities (yoga, aerobics, strength training and balance games) I must say the Wii Fit makes exercising fun. Just don’t expect it to be easy.
