‘Transformers’ brothas — more than meets the eye?

June 24th, 2009, 9:48 pm by Jayson Peters

ADDITION Film Transformers-Jar Jar AgainFirst there were the allegations that Jar Jar Binks in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace was a racial caricature in the vein of Stepin Fetchit. Now a pair of jive-talking, illiterate, bling-toothed Autobots are launching even more negative stereotypes into the sci-fi universe with the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but an Associated Press story goes into a lot of detail exploring the issue. The characters are called Skids and Mudflap. One is voiced by a black man, the other voiced by a white man. Kids interviewed seem to like the characters. Academic types who haven’t even seen the movie pretty much condemn them as inappropriate.

I seem to remember the robots in the original Transformers cartoon in the ’80s having speech patterns that seemed out of place for alien beings that looked like tractor trailers. Then again, they learned everything they knew about Earth from a scan of our media.

Then again, it was just a cartoon.

Bad DVDs: Invasion of the Title Snatchers

May 28th, 2008, 12:20 am by Jayson Peters

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery … and they’re wrong.

I discovered these doppelgängers while surfing Netflix recently. They popped up as recommendations in “Sci-Fi & Fantasy” under the “New Releases” category.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing! These have got to be some of the most shameless non-pron (I think …) rip-offs in the history of film — right down to the cover design.

AVP (2004, sequel in ‘07) vs. AVH (2007)

When a team of commandos is sent to investigate a series of mysterious incidents, they stumble upon the clash between these dangerous aliens and must run for their lives. William Katt and Dedee Pfeiffer star in this exciting sci-fi action film.” [Katt was the star of '80s TV's Greatest American Hero.] Read the rest of this entry »

TRANSFORMERS 2 release date!

September 28th, 2007, 10:30 am by Scott Kirchhofer

Variety is reporting that “Transformers 2” will hit theaters on June 26, 2009. Michael Bay is in the final stages of negotiation to direct the sequel, and Shia LaBeouf is also expected to return. Steven Spielberg, who took an executive producer credit on “Transformers,” was closely involved with the film, including bringing Bay aboard to direct and LaBeouf to star, is also expected to be involved in the sequel. New character rumors include Soundwave, the Dinobots and Constructicons, and possibly a transforming aircraft carrier - an idea which was too expensive for the first film. I guess we’ll have to wait a while longer until we see Unicron. The action-packed, super-entertaining summer blockbuster “Transformers” has grossed over $700 million worldwide. If you missed it, the movie is currently showing at IMAX theaters in Phoenix and Tempe at Arizona Mills. The DVD and HD-DVD are being released on October 16th. As a fanboy of Transformers, I thought this movie was amazing. Sure it had some flaws, but it exceeded my expectations and was the most entertaining movie I’ve seen in a long time.

More Than Meets…Darth Vader!

September 4th, 2007, 9:22 am by Scott Kirchhofer

vader/death star transformer

This is one of the coolest toys I’ve seen in a while. Combining Star Wars and Transformers is like mashing together two of my best childhood toy memories into one piece of glorious plastic. Hasbro has sold toys like this before, but this one is new and looks way better than the rest. You might think $49.99 is a bit much to spend on this beauty, but that was before I told you that it comes with “two awesome battle modes with electronic lights-and-sounds excitement!” Yes! It also comes with a Darth Vader pilot mini figure, two TIE fighter mini vehicles and three stormtrooper mini figures. This is a must buy for fans and collectors, and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t contain lead paint or magnets you could inhale or swallow.
