A brief programming note

December 28th, 2008, 9:00 am by Jayson Peters

Dear readers:

OH THE IRONYI wanted to let Nerdvana followers know that it might get quiet around this blog as the Tribune begins its transition to a new format starting Jan. 7. We’ll try to update as often as possible, but we’re going to be a man down and learning to do many new things. It’s a time of change, which is exciting — but there’s a lot of work to do.

In the meantime, bear with us and feel free to leave suggestions or criticism about what you’ve seen, or would like to see. (E-mail nerdvana[at]evtrib[dot]com, or just leave a comment below.)

Why not peruse the voluminous archives in our lovely sidebar, or subscribe to our RSS feed so you’ll know when we’ve returned with new content?

Scott, KeL and I are very grateful for the readers who have found our insane scribblings interesting and we hope to have more great and geeky stuff for you in the future!

Here’s to a great 2009. It can’t possibly be any worse than 2008 … can it?

Just when I thought it was safe to put away my Xbox 360 copy of Grand Theft Auto IV for good and concentrate on my other obsession, that venerable bastion of gaming journalism USA Today reports that Rockstar Games has announced a street date for the first of two new downloadable episodes for the game. On February 17th, the episode, entitled “The Lost and the Damned“, will be available for download on the Xbox Marketplace. No price has yet been announced. Read the rest of this entry »

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF makes Halloween a little sweeter

October 30th, 2008, 12:34 am by Jayson Peters

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

It might be too late to order the signature orange collection boxes of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, an annual drive to raise funds for needy children worldwide — but you can still participate. The campaign’s Web site has printable labels designed to turn any can into an official UNICEF collection canister.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is an easy way to teach kids — and adults handing out candy who might have some spare change — a charitable lifestyle. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s time to write the not-so-great American novel

October 29th, 2008, 8:00 am by Jayson Peters

As always, November is National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo, as it’s known to its fervent followers). The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, Nov. 30. Here’s a description from the organizers:

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It’s all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Some early pics of Nintendo DSi

October 2nd, 2008, 9:09 am by Jayson Peters

Courtesy of Games Press, here are some early pics of Nintendo’s upcoming camera-equipped handheld system. The Nintendo DSi was announced late last night our time at the company’s annual press conference in Japan. It will be in stores there next month with a pricetag of $180, and migrate to the U.S. sometime in 2009.

The DSi clearly resembles a DS Lite, only smaller and with larger screens:

ARRR you ready for Talk Like a Pirate Day?

September 18th, 2008, 3:42 pm by Jayson Peters

Avast, ye lilly-livered bilge rats! Sept. 19, 2008, be International Talk Like a Pirate Day. If nothing else, it will give you another excuse to annoy your coworkers and loved ones with expressions like “shiver me timbers!” and “poop deck.”

The folk holiday began in 1995 after one of the two founders injured himself playing racquetball and shouted “Arrr!” in a particularly piratelike manner. Robert Newton, the actor who played Long John Silver in the 1950 Disney film Treasure Island, is the holiday’s patron saint.

Here are some ways to celebrate the life piratical. Whatever you decide, just don’t forget to say your “Arrrs” and “Ayes!”

Warcraft Ex-pack street date! Finally!

Wrath of the Lich King box art from Blizzard

November 13! Lock the door, take the phone off the hook, stock up on food and mana potions! After torturing their loyal fans for almost a year now, Blizzard gave an official date for the release of Wrath of the Lich King, the next expansion pack to the hugely popular  MMPOG World of Warcraft.

Not so suprisingly, this news comes just before one of WoW’s only real competitors, Warhammer Online goes live on Thursday. While a bit of a transparent marketing ploy, it’s also understandable that Blizzard wants to keep their almost 11 million subscribers (and the nearly $100 million dollars a month they bring in) focused on their product and not a rival’s.

Warcraft’s previous expansion, The Burning Crusade, allowed players to travel through the fabled Dark Portal to the Orc homeland of Draenor. This time around players will be returning to Azeroth and heading for the frozen climes of Northrend.

As indicated by the title, players will meet up with the undead legions commanded by the former fallen paladin (boo to snooty paladins!) Prince Arthas, now the massively powerful Lich King. Some of the new features will include an increased level cap (80), new mounts, new talents, player-controlled siege weapons (at last!) and a new crafting profession. Best of all however, there’s even a new class, the Death Knight, a dual-weilding, necromantic death-dealing fiend. So now, I pretty much know where my free time for the next year is going.
