lg_downtown_bldg_may07.jpgToday the new Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication officially opened for classes in downtown Phoenix.

As a Cronkite School alumnus (class of ‘01) who knows well the state of the old school in Tempe, I was thrilled with the rare privilege of checking out the new facility last week as ASU was putting the finishing touches on it. What I saw left me a little envious of the students who will embark on a news media career in those halls. OK … a lot envious.

August 23rd, 2008, 12:20 am by Chris "KeL" Adams

Wrath of the Lich King

Blizzard has unveiled the opening cinematic for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King, the second expansion pack for the wildly popular World of Warcraft. Blizzard has a reputation for putting together incredible videos for their games and this one doesn’t disappoint. So if you know any WoW fans (and with over 6 million accounts world wide, chances are you do) point them towards it and watch them drool in anticipation. Unfortunately, there’s still no release date, but the smart money says that we’ll have it before Christmas this year.

The cake is not a lie. It’s our anniversary! You did remember … didn’t you?

Today marks one year since we launched Nerdvana, our mission to bring you the latest and greatest in sci-fi, fantasy, comics, gaming and general geekery. It’s been a wild ride and we’ve come a long way.

Besides showing you the fantastic world of Comic-Con and explaining the intricacies of the Star Wars “Expanded Universe” (sorry about that), we’ve provided plenty of previews and reviews of video games, movies and TV shows. Sure, we’ve had words, but we’ve also made beautiful music together.

We’ve got a sweet new logo that we unveiled a few months ago and our passion and determination to bring you interesting news and entertainment is at an all-time high. Thanks so much for reading and posting comments.

To the future! — Scott Kirchhofer, Chris “KeL” Adams and Jayson Peters

‘Rock Band 2′ to bring about ‘Chinese Democracy’

August 4th, 2008, 11:06 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Rock Band 2

No, it’s not a regime change in the world’s most populous nation, but something we’ve waited for almost as long. The first single from Guns ‘N’ Roses long (long, long, long…..) delayed album “Chinese Democracy” will be making its debut with the September release of RockBand 2. The track is entitled “Shackler’s Revenge”.

It’s among the more than 80 songs that will come packed with the newest version of the game. The announced set list is up on the official RockBand page. The first RockBand was one of my biggest motivations to buy an XBOX360 and the sequel looks like it’s going to turn the volume up to 11! My inner rock star is getting the tight leather pants, angry snarls, catchy tour names (the “No More Airplanes” tour) and substance abuse problems ready!

White House briefed on big new Mars discovery?

August 2nd, 2008, 11:21 pm by Jayson Peters

This Sunday May 25, 2008 photo provided by NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona, shows a polygonal pattern in the ground near NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander. This is an approximate-color image taken shortly after landing Sunday by the spacecraft's Surface Stereo Imager, inferred from two color filters, a violet, 450-nanometer filter and an infrared, 750-nanometer filter. (AP Photo/NASA/JPL-Caltech/University of Arizona)The blogosphere is abuzz that the Phoenix lander has discovered something much more significant than last week’s confirmation of water on the Martian surface. The sources stop short of saying it’s direct evidence of life, but is more likely evidence for the potential of life on Mars.

The word “compelling” is used to describe whatever the scientists have found — and President Bush has reportedly been briefed already about whatever it is. They also say a press conference is unlikely until mid-August so the Phoenix team has time to sift through all the data.

The robotic Phoenix Mars Mission spacecraft, run by the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at the University of Arizona, is packed with instruments to remotely search for environments suitable for microbial life on Mars, and to research the history of water there. It’s already a success on the water part of its mission, and if these rumblings are true may be about to go down in history one of the most important missions in space exploration.

One small step for man …

On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon as they stepped out of their lunar module.

That means next year will be the 40th anniversary of the moon landing.

Maybe we’ll go back some day.

The apes, says Spain, should be treated humane

June 30th, 2008, 12:33 am by Jayson Peters

orangutans.jpgThe Spanish parliament has voted to extend some human rights to apes.

Yes, apes.

As reported by Reuters, the resolution pledges Spain’s commitment to the Declaration on Great Apes, a 1993 document that demands the protection of our wild genetic relatives’ right to life, individual liberty and freedom from torture.

If it becomes law in Spain, as is expected, it would also mean no apes in circuses, commercials or films.
GREAT APES PROJECT

This is likely the first time a human government has voted to give human rights to nonhumans. Will it be the last?

Books: From ‘Star Wars’ to noir wars

June 28th, 2008, 12:40 am by Jayson Peters

LUCAS BOOKS IMAGES

If you’re like me and the most recent incarnations of Star Wars seem a bit cartoony for your taste (not that there’s anything wrong with that), you might enjoy the new “Coruscant Nights” series of books from Del Rey and prolific Star Wars novelist Michael Reaves.

Jedi Twilight, Street of Shadows and Patterns of Force will tell the tale of Jax Pavan, a Jedi Knight who survived the betrayal of Emperor Palpatine by melting into the shadows of the Empire’s slums and making his way as a private investigator.
