Plan B Entertainment has agreed to develop a sci-fi action franchise for the big screen as a potential starring vehicle for the actor.

Capcom will release Dark Void on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in North America on Jan. 19, 2010, and across Europe on Jan 22. The game is described as “an adrenaline-fuelled blend of aerial and ground-pounding combat which centers on Will, a pilot who crash lands in the Bermuda Triangle following a routine mission.

“Will wakes up to find himself in ‘The Void,’ an alternate world resembling a primitive earth where aliens with superior technology are planning to take over civilization. Together with a faction of humans who have disappeared into the Void, Will takes on the alien race using their own advanced technology including a high-powered jet pack to defeat them and keep order in the civilized world.”

My take on the ‘Modern Warfare 2′ controversy

November 15th, 2009, 12:44 am by Chris "KeL" Adams

mw21

This was a big week for video game fans. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 hit the shelves breaking records for not just video games, but almost every sort of entertainment release. Over 2 million people were online playing the game simultaneously on Thursday. Like any big release, there’s a certain amount of controversy with CoD: MW2.

Staying as spoiler-free as possible, during the course of the game’s storyline a group of criminals commit a terrorist attack and the player, in the role of an American soldier who’s undercover with the group, can take part in this act where numerous innocent civilians are injured and killed. This footage leaked before the game was released and people were outraged.

Having spent the last few days playing through the game’s story mode, I have to say that the outrage is overblown and unjustified. First, even before beginning the game, players are give an option to skip the potentially offensive level if they choose to. Second, and more importantly, despite the shocking nature of the scene, there’s nothing gratuitous about it. The event serves to further the complex story that developer Infinity Ward is attempting to tell. The overall story deals with the hard choices to be made when fighting global terrorism.

Saturday is National Gaming Day — at your library

November 13th, 2009, 6:02 am by Jayson Peters

3985161408_6cf8da18cb_bFirst we learn that comic books aren’t all that bad for kids. Now, boosted by the rich historical detail in video games like Assassin’s Creed II (out next week for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360) and the popularity of World War II as a setting for combat games, the American Library Association has declared this Saturday to be National Gaming Day at U.S. libraries.

While we’re certainly in a video game renaissance of respectability, old-school is represented as well. Corporate sponsor Hasbro has donated 16,700 sets of games including “Monopoly Deal,” “Pictureka!” the card game and “Scrabble Slam” for the event.

Xbox LIVE bans permanent; millions answer ‘Call of Duty’

November 12th, 2009, 1:40 pm by Jayson Peters

callofduty

Gamers by the millions turned out this week to trade their shiny gold rocks for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in what The Associated Press is calling the biggest-selling launch in the history of entertainment. Activision stock rose Thursday morning on this enthusiasm. And a reported million or so gamers remain banned from Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE service for modifying their hardware to play illegally copied software.

Microsoft told BBC News today that the banning is permanent, and that affected users will have to buy a new Xbox 360 console to recover their profiles and resume Xbox LIVE membership.

‘Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition’ coming to Xbox LIVE, PSN

November 10th, 2009, 10:03 am by Jayson Peters

re5aeAmerican gamers will be getting second helping of zombie-plague madness this spring when Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition becomes available.

Capcom says the new version of the game, which includes a new scenario called “Lost in Nightmares,” will be released this spring as downloadable content to owners of the blockbuster game via Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network.

In Japan the new edition will be available as a regular game disc at retail outlets, but Capcom said surveys show North American and European fans preferred DLC in a blind taste-test. As Kotaku points out, this conveniently means you can’t sell or trade the game away and just pick up the new and improved version later.

Microsoft store coverage: Windows into media’s Apple bias?

October 23rd, 2009, 3:48 pm by Jayson Peters

Yesterday’s grand opening of Microsoft’s first retail store at Scottsdale Fashion Square, and the accompanying release of the new operating system Windows 7 — generated a lot of media buzz. And, I’m afraid, some media bias.

I considered joining the hundreds of people who waited in line, some as long as 12 hours, to get their first look at the software giant’s first retail operation.

Then I realized that would mean standing in line with hundreds of people. Or at least dealing with corporate PR types on their Big Day.

But lo and behold, I found a way to blog about it anyway.

On the drive home Thursday, listening to National Public Radio’s All Things Considered like the loyal liberal media elite-type that I am, I was surprised at just how harshly host Melissa Block was grilling Microsoft representative Mika Krammer. Today I was wondering whether I imagined it, so I asked some colleagues. One of them had heard the same report and was also left with the impression that it went too far. UPDATED with more accurate release info and a video.

LucasArts today stepped outside its Star Wars-shaped box and unveiled Lucidity, a 2D puzzle/platformer in which players will control the environment as a young girl named Sophie wanders around controlled by the computer.

The game was unveiled on Gametrailers TV, and it will debut on Xbox LIVE and PC on Oct. 7 later this month.

The graphics, inspired by classical animation and paper textures, are gorgeous and the gameplay concept — while apparently similar to that of last year’s WiiWare title LostWinds is certainly intriguing. This is one to watch.

Nintendo tweaks some stuff, says ‘What console war?’

September 1st, 2009, 10:30 am by Jayson Peters

Nintendo WiiLast week Microsoft announced a new round of price cuts for its Xbox 360 gaming console, right on the heels of Sony slashing the price of its PlayStation 3 and announcing a cheaper, slimmer model. But Nintendo, which has never budged on its Wii pricetag of $250, still refuses to play along despite flagging sales and lackluster game lineups.

Today the company announced an Oct. 4 launch date for Wii Fit Plus, the sequel to Wii Fit, as well as a black Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus bundle and a black Nunchuk. In fact, Wii Fit Plus with the Wii Balance Board accessory will actually cost $10 more than the current Wii Fit. (If you have the board already, the game alone will cost you $20.)

But no price cut, unless you count the sudden return of the Wii Internet Channel as a free download. The application, which was free for the first few months after the Wii’s debut, was priced at 500 Wii Points (or $5) until today, when it was made free again and received upgraded Adobe Flash support. Take that, Sony! Microsoft slashes Xbox 360 Elite by $100

August 27th, 2009, 8:38 am by Jayson Peters

xbox360Last week Sony cut the price of its 80GB PlayStation 3 console by $100 and announced a slimline 120GB version will debut next month at the same price point, $299.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft will lower the price of its Xbox 360 Elite from $399 to $299, effective Friday — putting the two consoles on a more even footing going into a recession holiday shopping season.

The company also is expected to phase out the mid-range Pro console, which will get a $50 price drop, to $249 from $299, while supplies last. Read the rest of this entry »
