The trailer for James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi epic Avatar will screen Sunday on the world’s largest high-def video display at Cowboys Stadium before kickoff at the Dallas-Seattle game.

Twentieth Century Fox says Avatar ads will also be shown Sunday on all Fox-affiliate regional football games and during the Phillies-Yankees World Series game.

The film, shot entiredly in 3-D, opens in theaters everywhere Dec. 18.

While the world has been clamoring to get a sneek peek at the highly anticipated sci-fi epic Avatar, director James Cameron has been busy wheeling and dealing to bring television into the third dimension — and, no doubt, make himself even richer.

A deal announced Friday will put Avatar in several trailers that will haul Panasonic’s big-screen, 3-D TVs around the U.S. and Europe next month.

Avatar is shot entirely in 3-D, and it will be the first major motion picture to debut in both 2-D and 3-D when it is released in theaters Dec. 18. But the technology — both in homes and at theaters — is so new that it is sorely lacking in content and has no clear direction when it comes to disc and broadcast formats. Cameron’s name will give Panasonic a major edge in the coming dimensional war.

Because, in a recession, the first thing on people’s minds is this: “Gosh, I need to get me a better TV.”

If you’d like to get a sneak peek at director James Cameron’s hotly anticipated science fiction flick “Avatar,” now’s your chance. Head over to the movie’s official site, www.avatarmovie.com, and you can score up to two seats for a special showing of a 16-minute extended trailer. The preview will be shown in 3-D at IMAX theaters in Mesa and Phoenix this Friday. There will be two showings at each theater (6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. in Mesa, 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in Phoenix). Tickets are limited, so act quick or be prepared to wait for the movie’s December release.

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 1

Whew. The first day is over and much excitement was had. Crowds seemed to be down after the insanity that was Wednesday’s preview night. However, some areas remained packed. The “Twilight” panel was one of the toughest panels to attend with many fans standing in line from the wee hours of the morning to ensure they’d get a prime spot. Incredible footage was shown for numerous movies including James Cameron’s “Avatar” and Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass.” Given the reaction from the assembled crowd, I don’t think the latter will be without a distributor for very much longer.

Here’s a few photos of the first full day of Comic-Con.

The geek high holy week

July 20th, 2009, 2:21 am by Chris "KeL" Adams

cci-sizedIf comic book fans had a Mecca, it would be San Diego, specifically, this Wednesday to Sunday. This is the week that the stars (literally and figuratively) in the nerd universe align in San Diego. Geeks of all stripes will descend upon southern California in droves. Yes, this is the week of Comic-Con, the longest running and largest comic book convention in the United States. The con is four solid days (and one three-hour preview night) and 2.6 million square-feet of pop culture paradise.

Last year over 125,000 people packed the convention center and that number will probably be eclipsed this time around given how quickly tickets sold out. In addition to vendors, the biggest draw is the blockbuster panels the convention hosts every year. All aspects of the entertainment industry have realized what an important marketing opportunity Comic-Con is. They break out the biggest stars and announcements for maximum impact. There’s far too much to attempt to cover here. The Comic-Con website has the full list of all the panels and events, but here’s a quick rundown of the highlights.
