‘Arkham Asylum’ demo is crazy good

August 7th, 2009, 3:44 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

batmanaaThe demo for Eidos’ ‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ is out this week and it’s well worth giving a try. I’ve played through it twice and it’s a lot of fun. The demo shows Batman returning the Joker back to Arkham, only to find out it’s an elaborate trap set by the Clown Prince of Crime. Now the Dark Knight must battle his way through a gauntlet of thugs, psychopaths and his greatest foes to retake the most pourous prison in comics. It’s available for free on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 or PC, so you’ve got no excuse not to give it a try.

Holy father, Batman! Adam West takes up cape and cowl again

August 5th, 2009, 11:33 pm by Jayson Peters
Adam West

Adam West

Adam West, who played the Caped Crusader in the campy 1960s television series Batman, is returning to the franchise in the next season of Cartoon Network’s Batman: The Brave and the Bold.

The 80-year-old actor, who has made a new career for himself in voice-over work such as playing himself as the mayor of Quahog in Family Guy, will reportedly play Thomas Wayne, the father of the Dark Knight’s alter-ego Bruce Wayne. Playing mother Martha will reportedly be former ’60s Catwoman Julie Newmar.

West returned to Gotham in 1992 for an episode of Fox’s Batman: The Animated Series, playing the Gray Ghost, a washed up television hero who helps his biggest fan — Batman — solve a crime.

Welcome back, old chum.

Riddle me this …

July 20th, 2009, 9:25 pm by Jayson Peters

According to the Tampa Tribune (AP story here), a Florida man is being sued by DC Comics for copyright and trademark infringement because he was selling figurines that resemble characters from the 1960s Batman live-action TV show.

Johnny's Resin Kits

Johnny's Resin Kits

John Stacks, who ran johnnysresin.com (”closed” at the time of this posting, though pages are still accessible to Google search), marketed the resin model kits as representations of the actors who played Batman (Adam West), Robin (Burt Ward), Catwoman (Julie Newmar), the Joker (Cesar Romerot), Batgirl (Yvonne Craig), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Riddler (Frank Gorshin), Egghead (Vincent Price) and King Tut (Victor Buono).

The entrepreneur claims in the articles above to have working relationships with several of the actors represented, but this seems to be a matter of dispute — either that, or these stars of yesteryear are understandably trying to distance themselves from his predicament.

In a marketplace flooded with often sub-par, mass-produced toys and collectibles, it’s fairly common these days to find talented fans making — and sometimes selling — custom action figures and models. It’s pretty well understood, though, that selling such items is risky business at best. When it’s a likeness of an actor, that’s a different matter altogether — especially if one has the backing of said celebrity. But it’s also far less profitable.

DC Comics heroes to join forces with Islamic counterparts

July 8th, 2009, 12:26 am by Jayson Peters

Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman are teaming up with a group of comic book heroes from the world of Islam as part of a collaboration between DC Comics and Kuwait’s Teshkeel Comics.

According to the U.K. Guardian, a miniseries due within a year will see the American supers meeting The 99, a group of ordinary people each infused with one of the 99 attributes of Allah in the holy text of the Qur’an. So far, about two dozen members of the group have been fleshed out.

Details of the cross-cultural crossover are still up in the air, but Naif Al-Mutawa, the founder of Teshkeel, told the Guardian that the possibilities are many. “Are we going to have them working together from day one, or will they think the other is the enemy?” he mused. “Enemy number one is fear.”

Rise of the Batwoman

February 7th, 2009, 5:09 pm by Jayson Peters

Kotaku’s sci-fi sister site io9 has an interesting look at the aftermath of the Caped Crusader’s recent exit from the comics scene in Batman #681:

With Bruce Wayne “elsewhere” (and that’s all DC is saying about that), 2009 will see its first lesbian superhero in its longest running book as Batwoman takes over Detective Comics. DC super-writer Greg Rucka and artist J.H. Williams will be taking over the reins of the flagship title for “at least” twelve issues.

The Dark Knight is coming to DVD and Blu-ray next Tuesday. Those who want to see it on the big screen again (and not at some creepy discount theater, as I did FOR THE FIRST TIME last Tuesday) will get their chance Jan. 23 — that’s when Warner Bros. will roll out the Batman-Joker tour-de-force in hopes of upping the film’s Academy Award chances.

“We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen,” Dan Fellman, president of Warner Bros.’ domestic distribution, told Variety. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Batman R.I.P.’ arc concludes - and a hero’s ‘final fate’ is written

November 19th, 2008, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

BATMAN 681 DC COMICS Grant MorrisonRumors have been flying about the end of DC’s “Batman R.I.P.” arc [PDF checklist] by writer Grant Morrison. The action comes to a head in Batman #681, due out a week from today (Nov. 26). Sandman writer Neil Gaiman is expected to pen a two-part tribute to the character next year.

The buzz is that Bruce Wayne is done, one way or the other, and that he will be succeeded in wearing the cape and cowl by either Dick Grayson (the first Robin and now vigilante Nightwing), Tim Drake (the third and current Robin) or young Damian Wayne, Bruce’s child with Talia al Ghul. DC is also canceling its Nightwing, Robin and Birds of Prey titles. Is that a clue as to the identity of Wayne’s possible successor?

Lots of comic book heroes have “died.” DC’s “Death of Superman” rocked the comics world in the early ’90s — and the Man of Steel returned better than ever. And Captain America was assassinated following Marvel’s recent “Civil War” arc, but he, too, is back after a fashion.

One thing is for sure: Whatever DC has planned for Gotham’s savior, it will be exciting to watch events — and their aftermath — unfold.
