Gillan and Smith

Filming began today on the new season of Doctor Who, with Matt Smith as the latest incarnation of the Time Lord and Karen Gillan as his companion, whose full name is revealed to be “Amy Pond.”

BBC News has released the first image of the duo in costume, and it reveals the Doctor’s new look to include a tweed jacket, bowtie, rolled-up trousers and black boots.

According to the BBC Press Office, upon arriving on set in Cardiff for his first day of filming Smith commented: “I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

“I’m excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor.”

Smith has big shoes to fill: David Tennant, who played the Time Lord’s 10th incarnation, announced last year he would give up the role, although he may be returning for a big-screen adventure. Rumors have him announcing such a venture at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con.

If you missed it on BBC America — or, like me, miss watching it on the lower-tier Sci Fi Channel — the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas special is now available to download from Apple’s iTunes Store. “The Next Doctor” costs $1.99 and presents the itinerant Time Lord with an interesting dilemma: meeting himself. The Queen’s English — we are not amused by silly rhymes like ‘I before E except after C’

June 20th, 2009, 11:36 pm by Jayson Peters

British educators are being told to throw out one of the most widely recognized rules in English spelling: “I before E except after C.”

BBC News and The Associated Press reported this weekend on a U.K. government document that argues the rhyming device simply has too many exceptions to be worth teaching. Some experts agree, but others say it’s still broadly applicable. Every little bit helps, right?

“If you change it and say we won’t have this rule, we won’t have any rules at all, then spelling, which is already terribly confusing, becomes more so,” a senior English lecturer at King’s College London told the BBC.

What the esteemed language lords are forgetting is that all mnemonic devices will soon be obsolete in a world where the predictive text technology of mobile devices lets us spill our guts about meaningless crap with the barest proficiency in spelling — or vocabulary.

NBC picks up a hit BBC drama series when it debuts Merlin on Sunday. The series, which has earned a second season in the U.K., has been compared to Smallville for the way it took an established mythology and turned it on its head.

In the series premiere, the character of Merlin is a far cry from the wizard of legend:

With a letter from his mother revealing his innate ability to practice magic, Merlin (Colin Morgan) arrives in the city of Camelot to find Gaius (Richard Wilson), the Court Physician. Gaius takes Merlin under his wing to keep him out of trouble. Eager to discover his new surroundings, Merlin sets out to see the sites of Camelot and meets Arthur (Bradley James), a young bully who challenges him to a duel. After being thrown in jail for standing up to Arthur, Merlin attracts the attention of others in Camelot, including Gwen (Angel Coulby), Morgana’s (Katie McGrath) young maid, and most importantly King Uther Pendragon (Anthony Head, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who will forever change the course of Merlin’s destiny.
