More lost ‘Doctor Who’ stories to be staged for audio

08Big Finish Productions, masters of modern audio drama who kept Doctor Who alive with the original cast during the show’s long absence from the screen, are delving deeper into the show’s forgotten past. After already resurrecting scripts that were never made during Colin Baker’s time in the TARDIS, the company has announced it will record the stories that were set aside when the series was canceled in 1989 and Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor (pictured with Sophie Aldred as Ace).

Big Finish has only just begun producing ‘Doctor Who’ audios

the_bride_of_peladonAfter 10 years of partnership, the BBC has renewed Big Finish Productions’ license to create full-cast original audio dramas based on Doctor Who.

Long before the TV series was relaunched in 2005, Big Finish kept the flame alive using talent that had long been producing unauthorized audio adventures and would eventually contribute some of the new series’ most memorable episodes.

Doctor Who is at the top of its game today, with two popular spinoffs and a bright future — but it wasn’t always so. Many stories in the original series (1963-89) were proposed but never made due to strike or unplanned hiatus. Some even began filming before they were halted by these circumstances; others were written but never made it to film.

Colin Baker and Nicola BryantBig Finish Productions, which for years has been creating full-cast audio adventures starring the original TV actors on CD and as downloads, has decided to resurrect several episodes from Colin Baker’s time as the Time Lord that were abandoned after the show went on an extended hiatus in 1984. Billed as “Doctor Who: The Lost Stories,” the audio dramas will be released starting in January 2010 and star Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor and Nicola Bryant as his American companion Perpugilliam “Peri” Brown.
