DC’s ‘Blackest Night’ resurrects deceased titles

October 13th, 2009, 3:07 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

blackestnight1Comic book heroes and villians aren’t the only thing rising from the grave in DC Comics’ “Blackest Night” storyline. The publisher announced that several canceled titles would resume for one issue in January. The titles will continue their numbering from where they ended.

Though the books have been off the market for years, January’s one-shots will pick up in current continuity and deal with the effects the undead Black Lanterns are having throughout the DC universe. Artists for the projects haven’t been released yet.

The “Blackest Night” comic will be skipping that month to allow artist Ivan Reis to catch up in preparation for the series’ double-sized final issue.

Remember when your cereal choice was decided by the shiny toy contained within? DC Comics certainly remembers that marketing trick. After the super popular Black Lantern ring giveaway associated with this summer’s event comic “Blackest Night,” DC is going back to the well once more, or technically seven times more.

Comic book stores who order specific numbers of a certain titles in November will be able to purchase bags of the various Lantern factions’ rings. First up, on Nov. 4, will be the yellow Sinestro Corps ring. After that every other week will feature a different ring, orange, red, green, blue, indigo and finally violet.

Talking cars, sci-fi stars and stalwart superheroes are invading local comic shops this Saturday for Free Comic Book Day 2009.

Comic books began as a way for publishers to make money from idle printing presses by reprinting newspaper comic strips, but they have clearly taken on a life of their own. The industry celebrates this success each year on the first Saturday in May and tries to bring new readers into the fold with Free Comic Book Day.

But there’s more than free comics. Atomic Comics will host a slew of comic book creators at its various Valley locations, including Green Lantern: Blackest Night writer Geoff Johns, Flash and Green Lantern Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver and Supergirl writer Sterling Gates at the Mesa store. The official Marvel Comics Wolverine will appear 10 a.m. to noon at the Phoenix store, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Paradise Valley store and 5 p.m. to closing at the Chandler Fashion Center location. And select artists will be doing sketches for $5, with proceeds benefiting the Hero Iniative, a financial safety net for comic creators.

Spazdog Comics in Phoenix will have Jeff Mariotte, fomerly of IDW, author of many novels and writer for Presidential Material: Barack Obama, and local Daniel Davis who creates the daily webcomic Monster Commute.
