The official website of Star Trek Online has relaunched today with a new design and a first look at the game’s striking box art.
The online RPG, due out Feb. 2, is priced at $49.99. Subscription pricing has not been announced. PC system requirements were revealed last week.
Closed beta testing of the game, which is set in the generation after Star Trek: The Next Generation, began earlier this year.
Developers also announced that fan displeasure at word that starship interiors would not be accessible at launch has led to the inclusion of bridges as a venue for social interaction within the game.
But that’s not all! Hit the jump for a video showing how space combat will work.

The Associated Press has a report this morning on Champions Online, the other online roleplaying game in development from Cryptic Studios and published by Atari. The one that’s not Star Trek Online.
The article focuses on how players will be able to create their own superheroes, rather than play established supers like Superman or Spider-Man.

Think of it as a little shakedown cruise.
Star Trek Online will enter the perilous wormhole that is closed beta testing in late 2009, but the only way to guarantee yourself a seat on the bridge is to buy into Cryptic Studios’ other game, Champions Online.
A six-month “discounted” subscription will suffice, but those opting for a “lifetime” subscription will get a bonus — a Mirror Universe costume set for Trek Online.

Ah, canon. It can be such a tricky thing in a genre that takes itself so seriously. Take this update on the official Web site for the upcoming online roleplaying game Star Trek Online:
You may be curious to know how the new Star Trek movie affects Star Trek Online. Wonder no further, as we’ve put together a handy-dandy graphical timeline for your perusal. Also included is a written explanation that explains exactly how the movie and STO can coexist. Give it a look here.
Basically, Star Trek Online was in production before the recent Star Trek feature film, and now game developer Cryptic/Infogrames/Atari is in the position of having to make their futuristic universe make sense when viewed in context of the galaxy-shaking events of the movie. When this happens, whether in film, comics, novels, games, what-have-you, the resolution usually involves a major cop-out, or things become so complicated as to make one wonder how anyone is supposed to have any fun anymore. Infogrames Entertainment, the French parent company of legendary video game maker Atari, is changing its name to Atari to take advantage of the better-known brand name, The Wall Street Journal reports. The company just posted mounting net losses over last year and could use a new identity.
Just this past December, Infogrames acquired Cryptic Studios, the developer behind the upcoming roleplaying games Champions Online and Star Trek Online.
The financial report also reveals for the first time an expected release date for Trek Online: It’s due out by the end of Atari’s fiscal year, which is March 2010. Read the rest of this entry »

Star Trek has always been about peace and exploration — but that doesn’t always translate into fun computer games. Perhaps that’s why the background timeline from the development team of Star Trek Online sounds so bellicose. Cryptic Studios has been releasing periodic historical narratives intended to bridge the generation gap between the last film in the franchise, Star Trek Nemesis, and the upcoming MMORPG. Cryptic Studios is becoming a lot less cryptic about the upcoming MMORPG Star Trek Online. For Christmas the developers have unveiled a type of Federation starship that will be seen a lot in the game: the NX-91001, descended from the USS Enterprise-E commanded by Capt. Jean-Luc Picard.
I think I’m in love. I need to know a release date for this game — yesterday!
What follows is some of the first STO in-game information to go public — and it isn’t for the casual Trekker. Geeky technobabble alert! Read the rest of this entry »
