Let’s play swine flu pandemic! (It’s just a game … right?)

Why am I not surprised that a computer game based on the swine flu pandemic has beat a vaccine for the H1N1 virus to market?

You can play The Great Flu online at www.thegreatflu.com. It was designed by medical experts who apparently have nothing better to do at a university hospital in the Netherlands.

Thanks, Dutch doctors. (Cough, cough.) When the swine flu makes its epic comeback this fall, we’ll know who to blame. Unless this is like Ender’s Game, and world health officials have given up all hope of managing the crisis themselves, and they’re disguising the situation as a game that will inspire some child prodigy to step forward and save us all.

For the love of God, kids — PLAY THE GAME!

BOOK REVIEW: Ender lives on in ‘Exile,’ makes the jump to comics

Ender in Exile by Orson Scott Card from Tor BooksIf you love a thing, set it free. So it was with my copy of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game — a book I cherish so much I have been compelled to share it as often as possible.

It has had many sequels, from the redemption tale Speaker for the Dead (my personal favorite), which takes place 3,000 years later), to Ender’s Shadow, which overlaps with the original novel’s timeline and centers on Ender’s best friend in Battle School, the diminutive Bean. But Ender in Exile (hardcover, $25.95, Tor Books) is the first true, direct follow-up that takes place immediately after the original, chronicling “the lost years” between Andrew “Ender” Wiggin’s deliverance of humanity from an alien threat and his ultimate salvation of its soul in later volumes.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott CardOrson Scott Card’s Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel Ender’s Game and its follow-up Ender’s Shadow will be visualized in another medium for the first time by Marvel Comics.

Sci-Fi Wire reports that a limited comic book series based on the first book will hit shelves this fall.

Also, Tor Books will publish a direct sequel to Ender’s Game – called Ender in Exile — late this year.

Ender’s Game is the story of gifted Earth children in the future taken from their parents to train for war when the planet is threatened with another attack from an alien species. One of these kids, Ender Wiggin, becomes Earth’s salvation — but only after a tragic sacrifice.
