After the Universe pilot aired, reports circulated online that the game’s official website trumpeted the cameo as a sign of life — but since then, the site and its community forums have been offline. The company and its founder and principal owner, Gary Whiting, were recently sued by investors who claim misuse of company funds. The Mesa company was granted a license by MGM in 2006 to develop an online roleplaying game based on the Stargate film and TV series, but those efforts have repeatedly stalled as the game’s financial backing came into question. The developer of the online roleplaying game Stargate Worlds has reportedly secured the funding it needs to finish work on the project, which is based on a hit movie and TV series, and is on its way to repaying its vendors and employees. Cheyenne Mountain exec Shane Hensley told MMORPG.com:
In mid-August, the company’s statements took a more pessimistic tone, with CEO Tim Jenson telling the official Stargate Worlds online forum that his company has not managed to secure funding for the online roleplaying game. A report that surfaced in July suggested that if funding wasn’t secured by Aug.1, MGM Studios would pull the license that allows Cheyenne and its publisher, FireSky, to produce content based on the Stargate properties. So far, there is no official word that such a move is imminent. The employee, identified as “Khestral,” gives a picture of the game’s story elements, characters and gameplay. In April of this year, the company was reported to be facing significant financial difficulties — as so many have during the recession — but insisted development was progressing along with beta testing and that deals were in the works to keep it that way. The company told the fan e-zine GateWorld that its publicity efforts were in a “dark period.” Indeed, the last press release on the game’s Web site is dated May 4, 2009, and it concerns TV and movie star Frankie Muniz’ participation in the game’s formula racing team. Is the second attempt to field a computer game based on the hugely successful Stargate saga about to fall flat? In an interview with the unofficial fansite GateWorld, Stargate executive producer Brad Wright discusses the delays faced by Stargate Worlds, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game from Mesa-based Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment. |


Stargate Worlds may be in limbo as developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment struggles with financing, but that didn’t stop the roleplaying game from making an appearance in the Oct. 2 series premiere of Stargage Universe on Syfy.
Footage from the game was used in the early part of the episode, as geeky character Eli Wallace (David Blue, pictured) solves a puzzle hidden in the game by Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), who is looking for a brilliant young mind to unlock the final mystery of the Stargate.
“Things are actually very good here right now. We received some funding commitments that will provide financing over time and allow us to move forward with development and start catching up on our past due financial obligations, including some back payroll that we paid last week.”
