Happy holidays: Google offering free Wi-Fi at airports

November 10th, 2009, 10:15 am by Jayson Peters

If you’re going to be traveling this holiday season, you can thank Google for the free Wi-Fi.

about_logoThe ubiquitous tech giant is offering free wireless Internet service at 47 airports and on every Virgin American flight. All you need is a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or mobile device.

There’s a catch: Google will hit you up for a charitable donation that they will match, up to $250,000. And they’ll probably monitor everything you do and say while online, and record it for posterity or the inevitable government takeover of your life.

But hey, it’s FREE!

Phoenix Sky Harbor is NOT among the participating airports … but they already have free Wi-Fi.

Google aliens return!

September 20th, 2009, 10:14 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

For the third time in recent weeks, Google has replaced its logo with a scene of rampaging aliens. While the previous two were rather cryptic at best, this time around they’re clear about the purpose. It’s to celebrate the birthday of “War of the Worlds” author and sci-fi trailblazer H.G. Wells.

While I can appreciate the sentiment, Google seems to be getting awfully chummy with UFOS of late. That can only lead to no good. Keep watching the skies, friends.

Explore Legoland from your chair

vll

Can’t afford a real vacation? No problem! As usual, the Internet’s got you covered. Google Maps’ photographers recently took a trip to Legoland California and made it the first U.S. theme park to be mapped on Street View. Just go to www.maps.google.com and put in Legoland California and it’s like you’re there. Now you can take a first-person virtual stroll through the building block wonderland without ever leaving the house, putting on pants or spending a dime. That’s my type of trip!

Feds probing Apple’s ban of Google Voice app

July 31st, 2009, 11:26 pm by Jayson Peters

I wasn’t going to blog about this, but it just got a lot more interesting.

On Tuesday Apple rejected an iPhone app for Google Voice, a free VoIP service that lets users link their various phone numbers together. Immediately a googol of Google fans cried foul, saying the iPhone maker was stifling innovation by acting only in its own self-interest.

Now, late Friday, comes word via The Wall Street Journal that the Federal Communications Commission has sent letters to Google, Apple and iPhone carrier AT&T, wanting to know more about Apple’s practices of late.

A clash of the titans is brewing, it seems. And now the government is getting involved.

NYT: Google to launch PC OS

July 7th, 2009, 9:51 pm by Jayson Peters

GoogleThe New York Times is reporting that Google plans to introduce an operating system for PCs based on its Chrome browser. The report, citing unnamed sources, says an official announcement will come Wednesday on a company blog.

From the article:

The move would sharpen the already intense competition between Google and Microsoft, whose Windows operating system controls the basic functions of the vast majority of personal computers.

Google could well be hoping to capitalize on the rise of netbooks, the compact, low-cost computers that have turned the PC world on its head.

Updated: The official announcement is already out as of late Tuesday. (Thanks to Jared for the tip.)

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. (More)
