Phoenix Comicon organizers have announced the next big round of celebrity guests for Phoenix Comicon 2010, coming Memorial Day weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center.

Leading the pack is LeVar Burton, host of Reading Rainbow, Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Kunta Kinte from Roots.

Burton joins fellow TNG alum and ubergeek Wil Wheaton, along with the previously announced Jonathan Frakes, who played USS Enterprise first officer Will Riker. Frakes’ wife, General Hospital star Genie Francis, is also a guest.

Other Hollywood stars announced: John Schneider (Smallville and The Dukes of Hazzard), actress and geek goddess Felicia Day (The Guild, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), perennial guest and The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno, and Kevin Grazier, Ph.D., science adviser to the Syfy series Eureka and Battlestar Galactica. Today marks the end of Reading Rainbow’s 26-year run on public television. Only Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street have aired on PBS longer.

The Emmy award-winning show, hosted by actor LeVar Burton (Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots), featured children’s books and literary reviews by and for kids. It has struggled to stay on the air for years, sometimes producing only a handful of episodes per season as funding dried up. Now, as National Public Radio reports, neither PBS nor the Corporation for Public Broadcasting can afford to renew the broadcast rights.

That’s just a shame. Read the rest of this entry »

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Roots star and Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton is recovering from minor injuries he received in a car crash on July 13. The Associated Press reports that the 52-year-old actor’s Mercedes was struck by a Scion driven by a 74-year-old woman, and three parked vehicles were damaged in the chain reaction.

Burton played the blind USS Enterprise chief engineer Geordi LaForge in seven seasons and four feature films, who used an advanced visor and, later, ocular implants to “see” the electromagnetic spectrum.
