Is the time of making movies Down Under over?

hal-greenlanternProduction of Warner Bros.’ Green Lantern has pulled up stakes from Australia, part of an overall decision by the movie studio to reassess its overseas filming operations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The reason is the power of green — or the lack thereof. As the falling U.S. dollar continues its slide, the once-sound financial strategy to film Down Under has become more expensive. George Lucas took production of his Star Wars prequels to the then-new Fox Studios Australia in Sydney. In 1998, it was a bargain.

With a live-action Star Wars television series on the way, the land of koalas and kangaroos has been floated as a possible base of operations for that lucrative venture — but these days even Lucas isn’t so sure. Read the rest of this entry »

AZ congressional hopeful’s ties to ‘Star Wars,’ gaming

ward_jimJim Ward, a Republican who wants to challenge Democrat Harry Mitchell next year in Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, recently served as an executive at Lucasfilm and LucasArts.

According to his campaign bio, before leaving LucasArts last year Ward was president of LucasArts and senior vice president of marketing and distribution and online at Lucasfilm, Ltd., where he managed the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

He was part of the Lucas Empire for more than 10 years, and recently oversaw the release of Star Wars Battlefront, LEGO Star Wars and last year’s Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Star Wars Insider tweaks subscription model

swimagThe official Star Wars magazine is offering subscribers two free issues. Sort of.

Star Wars Insider, which publishes eight issues per year, is changing its six-issue subscription model for a limited time to give fans all eight issues for the usual six-issue price of $24.95.

This might be attractive to those wanting exclusive first looks at the upcoming live-action TV series set in A Galaxy Far, Far Away …

Inspired by the galactic saga, the Star Wars collection consists of limited edition as well as mass distribution footwear, apparel and accessories for men, women and kids. Classic adidas Originals track tops, and several legendary sneaker styles are represented with characters and scenes from the epic saga in reinterpreted versions.

Expect to see Darth Vader and stormtrooper graphics on select iconic Originals styles. Other key Star Wars characters and memorable moments from the films will also be represented in innovative, cool ways.

The spring/summer 2010 Star Wars collection will begin appearing at select retailers in January. There will also be a fall/winter 2010 line.
