Wii $50 price cut imminent? UPDATED! Confirmed!

September 23rd, 2009, 9:38 am by Jayson Peters

wiismallBuzz has been building for weeks that Nintendo is preparing to lower the price of its Wii console for the first time since it debuted in 2006, from $250 to $200. Now it’s reaching fever pitch, with the tech blog Engadget dating the drop as this Sunday, Sept. 27. The report, picked up by The Associated Press, cited a leaked Best Buy memo.

Sony and Microsoft cut the price of their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles last month, and gaming blog Kotaku has since posted purported leaked images of ads showing the lower Wii price.

UPDATED: Nintendo confirmed the Sept. 27 price drop tonight, and announced a Nov. 15 release date for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which the company is calling “the first truly multiplayer Mario title ever.”

Does ‘Super Mario Bros.’ compute?

August 17th, 2009, 11:31 am by Jayson Peters

super_mario_bros_boxResearchers in Denmark and London are trying to test the limits of artificial intelligence by seeing if a computer can beat the original Super Mario Bros. video game.

It won’t be quite the same as the Nintendo classic. They’re having to mixing it up with a random level generator because the original levels were deemed too easy for the AI. (Now that’s some content I’d like to see on the Wii’s Virtual Console!)

The real test will be whether the computer turns homicidal and destroys humanity when it beats Bowser, only to be told “Thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!”

Oh yeah … Super Mario Galaxy 2 is coming next year, too.

Metroid: Other M, due out in 2010, will explore the backstory of heroine Samus Aran.

December 17th, 2008, 2:19 pm by Jayson Peters

Mario Power Tennis from Nintendo

Pokémon fans will have plenty to cheer about in 2009 as Pokémon Platinum makes its U.S. debut March 22 on Nintendo DS.

The rest of us? Well, Nintendo is also digging up a couple of GameCube titles, Mario Power Tennis and Pikmin, adding Wii Remote functionality and slapping “New Play Control!” in front of their names (their exclamation point, believe me — not mine). Other Wii games include Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time from Square-Enix and MADWORLD from Sega.

My stars, where does the time go?

November 30th, 2007, 11:33 pm by Jayson Peters

My friends and coworkers are rapidly surpassing me at Super Mario Galaxy.

Most of them don’t have kids. I have two younglings, and that means I beat games much more slowly than I used to - when I complete them at all. Do you suppose they handicap for that? No!

But I get the last laugh when they have played through Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and want to sell it on.

Now if I could only finish Metroid Prime and Echoes
