The scramble to adapt comic characters to the silver screen continues. Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Rheese have turned in their second draft of the proposed Spider-Man spin-off movie, “Venom,” to Sony. The duo also wrote the screenplay for “Zombieland” which opens this week and looks potentially awesome.
No word on how they plan to rectify the fact that the Venom character was killed off in Spider-Man 3. In movies (and comics), if there’s money to be made, death is only a minor obstacle.
With the rumored “Magneto” origin movie still in limbo, this could be the first comic-book villain to get his own movie. The film is looking at a 2012 debut.

The heirs to comic-book artist Jack Kirby — who has co-creation credits for the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America and even Spider-Man — have sent copyright-termination notices to companies that have been making comic books, movies, toys and other works based on the characters, including Marvel, Disney, Sony Pictures, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Paramount.
According to the New York Times’ Media Decoder blog, the notices express an intent to own the copyrights as early as 2014.
While other parties involved had no immediate comment, the Walt Disney Co., which last month announced it was buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, downplayed the move in its statement:
“The notices involved are an attempt to terminate rights seven to 10 years from now, and involve claims that were fully considered in the acquisition.”
Kirby, who died in 1994, worked with writer-editor Stan Lee to create many of the most famous characters in comics. The properties are in demand in Hollywood, which has increasingly turned to the pages of comic books for blockbuster inspiration.

Marvel has begun a new program of posting complete digital version of five comics on their website each week. While I remain partial to the real world dead trees version of comics, this is a great opportunity to check out some titles from the comfort of your own home.
Of this week’s selection, while the Deadpool issue isn’t too shabby, I highly recommend 1602 #1 by comic powerhouses Neil Gaiman and Andy Kubert. I’d also suggest checking out Ultimate Spider-Man #129 next week by the almost-as-good team of Brian Bendis and Stuart Immonen.
Even if you’ve never read Ultimate Spider-Man (or any Spider-Man!) before, it will give you a strong sense of what the book is about without needing to know everyone’s backstory. Besides, Marvel has recently pushed the reset button in the Ultimate Universe and it’s a great time to jump on board if you’ve been thinking about it.

 Tim Gunn
Project Runway style maven Tim Gunn is helping Marvel Comics revive a group of comic characters that haven’t been in fashion since the 1960s.
Gunn, a self-professed childhood comic-book fan, is involved in a storyline that reintroduces high-fashion superteam Models Inc., according to an Associated Press report.

Could Disney’s recent four billion dollar acquisition of Marvel be bearing fruit already? That’s the latest rumor spurred on by a line in the most recent issue of “Entertainment Weekly.” In it, EW writes “Pixar is said to already be eyeballing an Ant-Man movie.”
With the right to so many of Marvel’s higher profile franchises tied up by other studios, it makes sense that some second-tier heroes would seriously considered at for their own films. And an “Ant-Man” movie has been in the works for a while now, with writer/director Edgar Wright wrapping up a second pass on the screenplay. While hardly strong evidence either way, this is more than enough to get fans buzzing (or whatever noise ants make).

The Walt Disney Co. announced Monday it is buying Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion, adding 5,000 beloved comic-book characters to its ranks and gaining an instant foothold in the key demographic of young American men, who are inexplicably unimpressed with Disney Channel faire like Wizards of Waverly Place and JONAS.
It’s also worth noting this brings Disney into direct competition with Warner Bros. in the comics-to-movie arena and opens up a world of possibilities with the Marvel Island attraction at Universal Orlando. As one blogger put it:
Wonder when the license agreement runs out on that (Aside: Can you say fifth gate Walt Disney World fans? WDW might finally get its thrill park. Let that sink in.)

 Natalie Portman
The Associated Press is reporting that Star Wars prequel trilogy leading lady Natalie Portman will play an updated version of nurse Jane Foster from Marvel’s Thor comics in the 2011 film adaptation.
Portman joins Chris Hemsworth, who will portray the mythical Norse warrior in the movie directed by Kenneth Branagh.
In 2005 Portman starred opposite Hugo Weaving in an adaptation of DC Comics’ V for Vendetta.

Marvel announced today that Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle will be appearing in Iron Man 2 as well as 2011’s Avengers movie. Downey Jr. will be reprising his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man, while Don Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard as James “Rhodey” Rhodes. Director Jon Favreau will also be returning for Iron Man 2 and will be an executive producer on Avengers.
I thought Terrence Howard did a nice job as Rhodey, but I’m a big fan of Don Cheadle (check out “Devil in a Blue Dress” if you haven’t seen it. ), so I’m excited to see this change. It’s looking like we’re going to get to see quite a bit more of the character in the sequel, including him suiting up in the War Machine armor.

After seeing their cross-town rival, Marvel, score two sizable hits this summer in The Incredible Hulk ($130 million dollars at the box office) and Iron Man ($313 million, good enough for 22nd on the all time list), DC Comics and its parent company Warner Brothers appear to be reconsidering their plans on movies featuring characters from the DC Universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC, WB and top creative talent from DC such as Jim Lee, have been meeting to discuss a new direction. This direction is “one that not only sees the DC characters emerge with a higher priority but also one that would see them developed with an overarching goal in mind.”

Famed comic book artist Michael Turner recently passed away after a struggle with cancer. Turner broke into comics in the late 90’s working for Image comics where he developed his own creator owned title, Fathom. He eventually left Image and founded his own studio Aspen MLT. He was most recognized for his beautiful work on covers. Both DC and Marvel called upon him to draw the covers to their most notable books, including recent “event” books such as Identity Crisis for DC and Marvel’s Civil War. Read the rest of this entry »
