The CEO of Mesa-based Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has released a statement via the official Stargate Worlds online forum that reveals his company has not managed to secure funding for the online roleplaying game.
Tim Jenson mentions “several attractive potential opportunities but no confirmed funding”:
We would certainly like to keep the community more up to date, but we also don’t want to be misleading by giving opinions or guesses about things that may happen or could happen. While rumors abound about our funding, at this point we have several attractive potential opportunities but no confirmed funding. We are evaluating multiple Stargate IP products to see if we can get some products flowing sooner than Stargate Worlds, but nothing has been approved or decided at this point . Many people have labeled these Stargate IP’s with various titles, but there is no confirmed title at this point for any game besides Stargate Worlds. While we are seeking funding, we have signed various confidentiality restrictions and it is not possible for us to discuss much with the community until these potential opportunities run their course. We certainly hope there is light on the horizon. Sorry that I can’t say much more at this point.
A report that surfaced last month suggested that if funding wasn’t secured by Aug.1, MGM Studios would pull the license that allows Cheyenne and its publisher, FireSky, to produce content based on the feature film and several ensuing TV series. So far, there is no official word that such a move is imminent.

Just over a week ago word emerged that the Arizona publisher of Stargate Worlds had until Aug. 1 to secure funding to finish the delayed game or MGM would yank the company’s license to produce an online RPG based on the Stargate feature film and TV series.
Now (Aug. 5) we have Shane Hensley, an executive with Mesa-based FireSky, chiming in on the game’s official message boards, saying he believes a “significant portion of the funds have been raised” and thanking fans for their support:

Hi all–quick update. A lot of people are on leave right now (including myself) but the guys showing the game to investors and upper management are all there trying daily to get us re-started.
My understanding is a significant portion of the funds have been raised, but it’s one of those situations where everyone involved (us and the investors) want to make sure there’s enough to cover all our needs. To be clear, let’s say we need X million. If someone puts in $100,000 right now, that’s great and much appreciated, but it doesn’t get the game shipped and that investor would lose his money if the rest isn’t raised in the long-term.
Needless to say, every single investor does substantial due diligence due to the delay of the game and negative press we’ve received. A significant number *have* pledged money on completion of their research into our books, however, so I find that very encouraging.
Otherwise, it’s an ongoing process and there just won’t be much news until then, but the day we return to full operations I’ll let everyone know. In the meantime, thanks very much for your support and well-wishes.

Gamers eager to explore the universe in an online roleplaying game based on the Stargate series have been getting that sinking feeling for some time now. Now a new report, citing a purported former employee, says the Arizona publisher of Stargate Worlds has until Aug. 1 to raise more capital or lose the license granted by MGM to adapt its properties. A staff member of Mesa-based Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, which is developing the online roleplaying game Stargate Worlds, recently posted some answers to fan questions on the game’s official message boards, giving hope that the project is indeed still kicking. The employee, identified as “Khestral,” gives a picture of the game’s story elements, characters and gameplay.

In April of this year, the company was reported to be facing significant financial difficulties — as so many have during the recession — but insisted development was progressing along with beta testing and that deals were in the works to keep it that way. The company told the fan e-zine GateWorld that its publicity efforts were in a “dark period.” Indeed, the last press release on the game’s Web site is dated May 4, 2009, and it concerns TV and movie star Frankie Muniz’ participation in the game’s formula racing team. The latest screen shots were released May 26.

The Arizona Ghostbusters were on hand to protect con-goers from spooks and spectres.
On Saturday, I ventured deep into the heart of downtown Mesa to check out this year’s Phoenix Comicon. I must admit that I was happy with the results. Every year that I’ve gone it has been larger and more professionally run. I remember the first year I attended, when it was held in the ballroom of a Best Western hotel in Phoenix. I could almost spit from one side of the entire convention to the other. Needless to say, it’s come a loooong way.

Here are some helpful links:
If it’s your first time at the con, you might want to read up on past articles previewing the event, or check out Scott Kirchhofer’s first-person photo essay about his experience last year. It was his first time at a comic book convention, and it helped to prepare him for the utter Nerdvana that is the San Diego Comic-Con over the summer.

Spawn creator and Valley resident Todd McFarlane has joined the already stellar lineup of guests appearing at Phoenix Comicon, Jan. 23-25 at the Mesa Convention Center.
Details on signings and panels he’ll be participating in have yet to be announced. McFarlane will appear on the Saturday of the con (Jan. 24).
McFarlane became a comic book superstar in the 1980s due to his work on Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man franchise. In 1992, he launched Spawn, which became one of the 1990s’ most popular characters: the comic became an Emmy Award-winning animated series on HBO and a live-action feature film from New Line Cinema grossed $100 million.

Attention all you comic book guys and gals: you can save on admission to the Valley’s own comic book convention. If you act quickly.
Memberships to Phoenix Comicon 2009 cost $25 through Sept. 30. After that, the price will rise to $30.
The event will run Jan. 23-25 at the Mesa Convention Center. [MAP] Organizers say there will be more guests, more parties and dances, and this year the age for free child admission with a paid adult ticket is actually being RAISED to 12, from 10 last year. Nice! When was the last time we parents actually got a break? (Except for that tax thing.)
The impressive guest list so far includes Marina Sirtis, Counselor Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation; geek blogger/author/TNG actor Wil Wheaton; Aaron Douglas, Chief Tyrol on Battlestar Galactica; Gil Gerard and Erin Gray from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century; Lou Ferrigno, TV’s Incredible Hulk; and comic book writer and Star Wars and Dune novelist Kevin J. Anderson. Read the rest of this entry »
