Deadpool the Atomic kitten radiates nothing but cuteness

September 23rd, 2009, 11:01 pm by Jayson Peters

chandler-cat-aka-deadpool-at-homeNot all heroes are in the comic books — some sell them.

The staff of Atomic Comics in Chandler recently got to play savior to a lost baby kitty who got trapped in the walls of the store. Once it was determined the meowing that customers were hearing wasn’t coming from a toy, the animal was cut from the walls by Chandler Fashion Center maintenance.

An Atomic employee adopted the male cat, named Deadpool, pictured above in a photo from the Atomic Comics website. Personally, I think Sabertooth would have been a more appropriate moniker. But, what’s in a name?

Holy cow! Dead, scaly cow …

I, for one, join them in welcoming our scaly new overlords. I also plan on taking a good, hard look at my next hamburger …

Meet the new witch of Wookey Hole

July 28th, 2009, 11:05 pm by Jayson Peters

It’s no Hogwarts, but it did stand in for the fictional magic academy’s Chamber of Secrets in the movies. And it has that new-hag smell.

The company that runs Wookey Hole Caves in western England recently interviewed applicants for the post of resident witch. A rock formation in the cave system is reputed to be a sorceress turned to stone by holy water, and the tourist attraction employs someone to bring the local legend to life. That responsibility now belongs to former real-estate agent Carla Calamity. If that is her real name.

(Maybe people didn’t fancy buying a home from someone named “Calamity.”)

Her annual contract is worth $82,000 U.S., but you have to know about witchcraft, be comfortable sleeping underground, and like cats. If Ms. Calamity fails to impress, all this could be yours next year.

The cave system was seen on film in the 1975 Doctor Who serial “Revenge of the Cybermen” and the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Wormsign

A giant worm that spits and smells like lilies.

Back up — I’m still on giant worm.

A group of researchers from the University of Idaho are using shovels, strainers, chemicals and even electricity to coax the elusive giant Palouse earthworm out of hiding in the rolling farmland of the American Northwest. One specimen found in 2005 and preserved under glass is 6 inches long, but sightings from the late 19th century describe worms up to 3 feet in length.

The Associated Press reports that conservationists want the Obama administration to put the little-studied species on the endangered list.

All I know is, these electricity-wielding monster hunters should take care not to make the worms angry. After all, the spice must flow.

Regeneration or Degeneration?

July 2nd, 2009, 5:14 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Wired is reporting that cellular biologists from the Max Planck Institute are making headway in their studies of the regenerative abilities of salamanders. They’re hopeful these advances can be used to help humans regrow missing limbs  as well.

This is a nice thought, but we all know how this is going to end. Those scientists would know as well, if only they kept up on the comic book lore. Over 45 years ago in The Amazing Spider-Man #6, Dr. Curt Connors tried this very experiment using reptile DNA. He successfully regrew his missing arm, but was also transformed into The Lizard. Connors has been cured of his affliction and relapsed to battle Spider-Man countless times. He’s even a front-runner to face off against the web-spinner in the next Spider-Man movie. Is this really the sort of menace we want to introduce into the world?

And you thought your job was bad…

June 18th, 2009, 5:40 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Here’s a story to make you feel better about your job. The AP is reporting that workers cleaning up Washington’s Hanford nuclear reactor have come across radioactive wasp nests. The wasps constructed the hives out of “fairly highly contaminated” mud containing radioactive cesium and cobalt. While most of the wasps have moved out, there could be thousands of nests to be cleaned out. This just goes to show that no matter how bad your job is, it can always get worse.

It’s time again for Worldwide D&D Game Day (already?)

May 20th, 2009, 12:40 pm by Jayson Peters

gameday2009_mm2If it seems like Wizards of the Coast was just holding Worldwide D&D Game Day events to celebrate a Dungeons & Dragons book launch, you’re right – the last one was as recently as March, when Player’s Handbook 2 came out. But Monster Manual 2 hits shelves this week, so it’s time again for a free adventure at your friendly local gaming store. You can find a list of participating retailers at the game’s official Web site as well as details at the event page:

Come and face down enemies (both brand new and some old returning favorites) jumping right off the pages of the next big monster expansion for the game. While you’re at it, beat those vile beasts down with characters using options from upcoming releases. No matter if you’re new to the game or a 4th Edition veteran, we’ll have everything you need to embark on an all-new adventure!

Just for participating you’ll take home the pregenerated character sheet and a miniature of the character you played. If you DM the game, you’ll take home the adventure itself, a poster map of the encounter areas, and a pack of monster miniatures used in the adventure.

Wizards’ official site is also celebrating the occasion with an article looking back at the history of the MM2 cover boy, “the monkey-headed, tentacle-armed Prince of Demons himself — Demogorgon.” Because two-heads are better than one, right?

If you miss it, or just can’t get enough, the next Game Day event will be in September, when Dungeon Master’s Guide 2 launches.
