August 5th, 2009, 10:45 am by Jayson Peters

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core RulebookJust days before the launch of their much-anticipated Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook, Paizo Publishing announced that the first print run had sold out, with all preordered copies on their way to stores for an Aug. 13 release.

“We thought we had printed enough to last us at least until the end of this year, but skyrocketing demand from our customers and distributors has us reprinting already,” said Lisa Stevens, CEO of Paizo. “We have a healthy amount heading to Gen Con, but we think even those will go fast.”

Gen Con, the world’s largest and longest-running gaming conventions, will be Aug. 13-16 in Indianapolis. Read the rest of this entry »

Pathfinder RPG Bonus Bestiary

This Saturday, June 20, is Free RPG Day, and gamers across the globe will be able to grab brand-new material for a variety of pen-and-paper roleplaying games — no overstock, retail-priced or dead product here. The goal is to get gamers inspired to play a new RPG, which can create sales through local game stores.

In the Valley, Gamer’s Inn in Mesa is listed as a participating retailer.

Sponsors include Wizards of the Coast, which contributed a Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition adventure module and Dungeon Tile; Paizo, which contributed a D&D 3rd Edition-compatible Pathfinder Bonus Bestiary (pictured); and Q-Workshop, which contributed unique gold dice. Many others are involved, and you can see what their contributions are at the Free RPG Day Sponsors page.

April 6th, 2009, 10:58 pm by Jayson Peters

Wizards of the CoastToday the game company Wizards of the Coast filed three lawsuits targeting eight people accused of distributing pirated copies of its new Dungeons & Dragons book Player’s Handbook 2, while simultaneously ending its arrangements with online retailers to sell PDF copies of its past and present products. Former D&D designer to launch Dungeonaday.com

March 5th, 2009, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

When Dragon and Dungeon magazines shed their physical forms to go to an online model, who knew so many publications for tabletop RPG players would burst onto the scene?

Next week Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition designer Monte Cook will launch Dungeonaday.com, which he describes as “a subscription-based website that will offer new game content every weekday. Basically, what I’ll be doing is building an ongoing dungeon-based campaign of a decidedly old-school tradition, but utilizing all the newest presentation options. So expect an adventure like no other with hypertext references to all the important game content (including various rules references), fluid encounters, and incredible amounts of detail.”

You can read more about the venture here, but basically the content will be somewhat “rules-lite” with a focus on the 3.5 D&D rules set.

The game that just won’t die: 3rd Era brand keeps D&D 3.5 alive

December 11th, 2008, 12:02 am by Jayson Peters

With many gamers still disenchanted with Wizards of the Coast’s new edition of Dungeons & Dragons, it seems a cottage industry has developed to support the popular d20 System that sprouted from its predecessor in 2000.

First to the party was Paizo, the former publisher of the beloved Dragon and Dungeon magazines, who declined to support the new edition and instead rolled out a revision of the 3.5 rules, the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. That game is now in an open beta phase, with free PDF downloads and a final hardcover edition coming in August.

Now, another longtime 3rd edition supplements publisher is getting in on the act. Green Ronin Publishing is making a host of their classic titles available anew via PDF and print-on-demand. They’re rechristening the line 3rd Era. “3rd Era books are compatible with the 3rd edition of the world’s most popular roleplaying game and its many offshoots and variants,” says the company’s announcement.

GEN CON ‘08: When is D&D not D&D? When it’s Pathfinder

August 15th, 2008, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Beta coverGen Con, the annual convention of fantasy gaming companies and enthusiasts, is going on this weekend in Indianapolis. Last year’s buzz was centered around the announcement of the Fourth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, which is now in stores and on gamers’ bookshelves and tabletops. But that event created a schism of practically religious proportions, and much of the attention at this year’s Gen Con is focused on the result: The new Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
