Comic-Con founder, Sheldon Dorf, passes away

November 5th, 2009, 2:12 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

cci-sizedSheldon Dorf, the man responsible for starting the convention that would become the San Diego Comic-Con, died Tuesday from kidney failure. Dorf was 76.

In 1970, Dorf put together the Golden State Comic-Convention, in a time where comic book cons were few and far between. From these humble beginnings the convention grew to what is now the largest gathering of comic and pop culture fans in the country.

More proof that Comic-Con is out of control

October 7th, 2009, 12:58 am by Chris "KeL" Adams

cci-sizedMost of us have just recently finished recovering from this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con. Next year’s event is scheduled for July 21-25, 2010, well over nine months away. As of today, four-day passes with preview night admittance are sold out already. However, four-day passes that don’t include preview night are still available for $100. For the moment, at least. Apparently jacking up prices compared to previous years is doing little to decrease demand.

If you were planning on making the pilgrimage to comicdoms holiest of holys next year, better act fast or you may wind up on the outside looking in.

Comic-Con to leave San Diego?

July 30th, 2009, 6:22 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

Fresh off their highest profile convention ever, Comic-Con’s future in San Diego may be in doubt. There’s no secret that the convention is too large for the current facilities. Four-day tickets for the event sold out four months in advance. The con expanded into nearby hotels for some programming, but clearly it is straining at the seams. Because of this, other convention-friendly cities, like Los Angeles and Las Vegas have been sniffing around seeking to lure the yearly comic book extravaganza away.

Until now these have been mere rumblings, now there are reports that the con has demanded that the convention center expand by 2011 or the SDCC will relocate. The con has a contract to stick around through 2012, but without some more elbow room, that may be the final year in San Diego.

July 27th, 2009, 9:32 pm by Jayson Peters

News out of this past weekend San Diego Comic-Con failed to bring us the rumored word of a big-screen Doctor Who movie with outgoing TV series star David Tennant, but it did confirm casting speculation for his final episodes, due this Christmas. (Spoilers ahead.) Read the rest of this entry »

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 3 & 4

July 27th, 2009, 3:00 pm by Chris "KeL" Adams

vbWell, another Comic-Con is in the books. The weekend only elevated the already rampant insanity that is inherant when you gather 125,000-plus fanboys/girls and the objects of their obsessions in one area. After spending most of the day Friday making the rounds of the convention floor and seeing the sights, I decided to take it easy and spend Saturday going to panels.

First up was the always entertaining “Black Panel.” Most of the programming at the con has a fun and humorous tone, but every year panel moderator Michael Davis goes above and beyond to make sure attendees have a good time. This year, some of the guests included, rappers Ludacris and Prodigal Sunn, comic writer and BET president Reginald Hudlin, artist Denys Cowan and original Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols.

LEGO goes to infinity and beyond!

July 25th, 2009, 10:12 pm by Jayson Peters

The Disney Blog (not an official Disney blog, but a darn good one) talks a bit about the LEGO Toy Story Mini Figures that debuted this week at San Diego Comic-Con.

What caught my eye was the Army Men — complete with a rifle:

ts-gam-sm

Is LEGO further easing their stance against weapons in the hands of its MiniFigs that led to the rise of third-party accessories from companies like BrickArms? Or was the money to be had in an alliance with Disney-Pixar just too good to pass up?

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 2

July 25th, 2009, 9:07 am by Chris "KeL" Adams
This is not me in costume.

This is not me in costume.

The comic con is in full swing. Friday was a hectic day with the convention floor more packed than ever. The lull that seemed to run for most of Thursday is definatly over. Things were hectic and I loved every minute of it.

Full disclosure time, I took a new personal leap in the realm of geekdom. After getting numerous nerdy tattoos, I decided that the time was ripe. I’ve officially given up any pretense at being anything other than the full-blown comic dork that I am. I decided to embrace that feeling and just run with it. So this year, I attended the con in costume.

I’ve gone to the San Diego Convention nine out of the previous ten years. In most of those years, I’ve shaken my head and even mocked those who participated in cosplay. That being said, I must admit I had a great time doing it. I talked to dozens and dozens of friendly people, met those I wouldn’t have normally, got tons of compliments and even picked up a few gifts from new friends. As geeky as it sounds, walking the floor in full costume was an entirely new experience and I’m so glad I did it.

As busy as Friday was, Saturday stands ready to pack in even more fans. Saturday is traditonally THE day of the con. Tons of panels, numerous appearances by stars and relentless activities on the convention floor. The normal wall-to-wall insanity of the convention is going to be cranked up to 11 and will sweep everyone along with its tide of wildness.

San Diego Comic-Con: Day 1

batman

Whew. The first day is over and much excitement was had. Crowds seemed to be down after the insanity that was Wednesday’s preview night. However, some areas remained packed. The “Twilight” panel was one of the toughest panels to attend with many fans standing in line from the wee hours of the morning to ensure they’d get a prime spot. Incredible footage was shown for numerous movies including James Cameron’s “Avatar” and Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass.” Given the reaction from the assembled crowd, I don’t think the latter will be without a distributor for very much longer.

Here’s a few photos of the first full day of Comic-Con.

San Diego Comic-Con: Preview night

“They should’ve sent a poet. So beautiful. So beautiful.”

Ahhh, preview night of the San Diego Comic Con, is there anything better in the geek world? I think not. It’s better than the premiere of that big summer blockbuster. It’s better than birthdays. It’s better than Christmas. It’s better than all of those combined. Four days of full-on nerdery await and Wednesday night was just the appetizer. This is the week we fans wait for all year. The allure and promise of Comic-Con lies heavy in the air. A chance meeting with Seth Green, an autograph from Joss Whedon, a sketch from Jim Lee; anything seems possible on preview night.  Take a look a some photos for just a hint of what it’s like at the con.
