Being a huge fan of both of their works, I was probably most excited to attend the Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness panel. They were there to promote their new run on the (red) Hulk although most of their 45-minute Q & A session was about Heroes (Loeb is a co-executive producer and writer for the hit tv show), the writer’s strike, getting into the comic book biz, favorite projects they’ve worked on together (Superman/Batman), and generally what drives them to be creative and have fun doing what they do. My only regret is that I couldn’t stay longer, but some of us have to work on Saturday. Here are some photos I took at the convention. Hope you enjoy them. And if you’re not busy tomorrow check out the second day’s schedule of events at the Phoenix Cactus Comicon 2008.

The herald of Galactus is dying. For untold years, Norrin Radd surfed the galaxy, exploring the darkness between stars, witnessing the rise and fall of vast civilizations. As the protective material surrounding his body breaks down, Silver Surfer and those around him must come to terms with the idea that he may soon be no more. In the final issue of the Marvel Knights’ series, he returns to Zenn-La, the planet of his birth, to draw his last breath. With beautifully painted artwork from Esad Ribic (House of M, LOKI) and a compelling, heartfelt story by J. Michael Straczynski (Amazing Spider-Man, Thor), this series is easily one of the best this summer and it’s sure to have an excellent ending. “Geek” and “nerd” used to be negative terms. After all, the former once referred to carnival performers who decapitated live chickens with their teeth, and the latter was the subject of a revenge campaign that began in the mid-’80s and stretched into the ’90s. But these labels have evolved over time to be badges of honor among those who renounce conformity, as well as anyone who is passionate about a hobby. You can be a computer geek or a comic book nerd or even a Board Game Geek and still stand tall with the jocks. You can even be a sports geek! (I like to refer to fantasy sports as “Dungeons & Dragons” for jocks.) Everybody geeks out sometime. Welcome to Nerdvana. I’m Jayson Peters, your guide to all things geeky. This blog is meant to be a spotlight on the newest and greatest things in geekdom, from comics and gaming to cult classics and TV obsessions. Nerdvana is about all these things, and more. Except the chicken thing. That’s where I draw the line. A little about me: I’m a page designer for the print editions of the East Valley and Scottsdale Tribune. I’ve lived in the Valley all my life and worked at the Trib in various roles since 1998. I also compile the daily TV highlights (Channel Surfing) for the and serve as a copy editor when needed. I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism from ASU and an associate’s degree in classical studies (history, mythology, Latin) from Phoenix College. That sounds nerdy, doesn’t it? But I also love television and I have a huge movie collection, plus video games from the NES to the Wii. And more than a few “Star Wars” action figures and PEZ dispensers, I’ll admit. You’ll also find Tribune graphics guru Scott Kirchhofer chiming in when he feels the urge. He’s a thrill seeker with a passion for comics and gaming that is positively infectious. |

I’ve been a fan of comics my whole life and a pretty serious fan/collector for the last five years so it’s kind of shocking I have never been to a comic book convention until today. After spending about three hours at the
