Troubled ‘Stargate’ game shows up on Syfy series premiere

October 12th, 2009, 9:22 am by Jayson Peters

normal_sgu_101_0367Stargate Worlds may be in limbo as developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment struggles with financing, but that didn’t stop the roleplaying game from making an appearance in the Oct. 2 series premiere of Stargage Universe on Syfy.

normal_sgu_101_0379Footage from the game was used in the early part of the episode, as geeky character Eli Wallace (David Blue, pictured) solves a puzzle hidden in the game by Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), who is looking for a brilliant young mind to unlock the final mystery of the Stargate.

After the Universe pilot aired, reports circulated online that the game’s official website trumpeted the cameo as a sign of life — but since then, the site and its community forums have been offline.

The company and its founder and principal owner, Gary Whiting, were recently sued by investors who claim misuse of company funds. The Mesa company was granted a license by MGM in 2006 to develop an online roleplaying game based on the Stargate film and TV series, but those efforts have repeatedly stalled as the game’s financial backing came into question.

Syfy scores with women

July 31st, 2009, 1:14 pm by Jayson Peters

nup_134426_0008There are four words you don’t see together very often.

Syfy, the new identity of the former Sci Fi Channel, is claiming impressive gains both among total viewers and women ages 25-54 since relaunching one month ago.

The network, owned by NBC Universal, scored the best July in its 17-year history with the demographic groups, a feat it attributes to the new series Warehouse 13 and returning hit Eureka.

July 7th, 2009, 12:54 pm by Jayson Peters

nup_132198_0003Today’s the day. The Sci Fi Channel is no more, replaced in a vortex of rebranding and other media industry buzzwords with an alien entity called, simply, Syfy. The new identity launches tonight with the network’s new series Warehouse 13.

In the spirit of changing the style and ignoring the many, many problems of substance, here are a few other cable networks with accompanying suggestions for retooling their brand identities in the age of Syfy. Read the rest of this entry »

2-minute Syfy promo tops any Sci Fi Channel Original Movie

July 3rd, 2009, 12:01 am by Jayson Peters

The Sci Fi Channel has launched a two-minute “brand film” that the cable network says reflects the look and feel of its new identity “Syfy,” which launches Tuesday. You can watch it here: www.syfy.com/imaginegreater

The video features talent from various network shows, including Sanctuary, Eureka, Stargate Universe, Destination Truth, Ghost Hunters, Scare Tactics, Warehouse 13 and Caprica.

It’s a peppy, pretty little thing that won’t make you feel like your life is being sucked into a collapsing star — unlike many of Sci Fi’s original fare. But the title, “House of Imagination,” does nothing for me — how can it possibly compare to the nomenclature of Sci Fi Channel Original Movies like “Mansquito,” “Frankenfish,” “Death Bed: The Bed That Eats” and “KAW”? (All real.)

Rebranding ain’t pretty business, folks

June 23rd, 2009, 5:08 pm by Jayson Peters

jabbathehuttrotjDid you hear the one about how Pizza Hut is going to change its name to simply “The Hut?”

Well, it isn’t true. At least, it isn’t the whole truth: The company has been test-marketing a secondary brand, dropping the word “Pizza” from its logo in some cases as it expands its menu and tries to appeal to a younger, more mobile generation. Mobile as in mobile phones. As in texting.

When will executives be able to embrace technology without being so totally in awe of it that it must define everything they do? Read the rest of this entry »
