The Associated Press is reporting that Star Wars prequel trilogy leading lady Natalie Portman will play an updated version of nurse Jane Foster from Marvel’s Thor comics in the 2011 film adaptation.

Portman joins Chris Hemsworth, who will portray the mythical Norse warrior in the movie directed by Kenneth Branagh.

In 2005 Portman starred opposite Hugo Weaving in an adaptation of DC Comics’ V for Vendetta.

    Branagh to direct Thor movie?

Variety is reporting that actor/director Kenneth Branagh (Henry V, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets) is in discussions to direct Thor, the next Marvel Comics movie to hit the big screen in 2010. Branagh wouldn’t have been my first pick to helm a Thor movie, but then I wouldn’t have picked Jon Favreau to direct Iron Man (out on DVD today!) and he rocked that.  So I guess a good director is a good director regardless of the genre.

I’ve never been a big Thor fan (more of a Beta Ray Bill guy), but if they do it right, I can see how this movie could own. For all of its faults, The Incredible Hulk nailed one thing that no super-hero move had done before: the scope and feel of a comic-book fight scene. The climactic clash between The Hulk and the Abomination was pitch-perfect. Replace those two with the Odinson fighting the Absorbing Man, the Wrecking Crew, the Destroyer or even a rampaging Hulk and you’ve got box office gold right there.
